It's either broken or impossible, depending on how you play. If you game the system you can be immensely overpowered before you even get the Mithril (and you can to a lesser extent in the GBA version, not sure about the PSP version). If you play through it normally then you'll probably get curbstomped.Xeogred wrote:After beating FFII on the PSP I still want to check out the NES version just to see how broken and impossible it is, lol.
What RPG are you playing right now?

Yeah, I don't think I'd want to grind forever to make it doable though, lol. I can definitely see how it'd be very easy with TONS of patience since the system is easy to abuse, but yeah. The fact that you lose stats in that version sounds pretty brutal. I watched some LP of someone playing the last dungeon and he made it look really easy, but he probably did a lot of research and knew what he was doing.MrPopo wrote:It's either broken or impossible, depending on how you play. The cave to get the mythril I think was one of the harder dungeons in the PSP version in my run, lol. Overall the game was a fair challenge, but after the mid point or so I was pretty much invincible. Just like most FF's that allow everyone to use magic.
I thought FFV was consistently more of a fun challenge overall. Atmos and the first major battle with ExDeath at his castle were crazy fights. Final boss fight was actually pretty easy though, I grinded a lot though so that probably sums it up. It was kind of like the feeling of me being overpowered by the end of Tactics Ogre (SNES) though, I don't feel like it ruined the fun, my invincible-ness was well deserved after all the stuff I went through (let's just say !RapidFire, !Dualcast summons, and Mime was too much for Neo Exdeath to handle!)
I still can't stop thinking of FFV now. So good! Only took me 3 times to realize that, haha.
Re: What RPG are you playing right now?
Just recently beat Chrono Cross, which I hadn't done since it came out.
Currently working on Legend of Dragoon which I bought back when it came out but never beat. I got to disc 3 then something happened, don't know what. So I started fresh.

I've only been meaning to for years, but I finally started Final Fantasy 6. Loving it so far.
I'm about 4 hours in and I just got to Mobliz.

After playing four old FF's in a row you just had to play this now to temp me to play even more?!?CFFJR wrote:I've only been meaning to for years, but I finally started Final Fantasy 6. Loving it so far.

But yeah, I just might replay FFVI sometime later this year to re-evaluate my scoring, hard to narrow down the rankings with FFIV-FFVI.
Prepare for a very easy game though, that's definitely when the FF's got insanely easy.
Favorite character so far? Always liked Edgar a lot myself, heh.

FFVI is my fave Final Fantasy. It was easy, moreso once you actually check the internet and learn the mechanics in the game that weren't implemented properly, like Physical Evasion not working, everything's based aroung Magic Evasion for dodging, so Blindness does nothing but gives you cool-looking goggles.

If I have to pick a favorite at this point, it'd probably be Sabin. He's a very entertaining guy, heh. Though I'm pleased to say that I like everybody I've encountered so far, which is refreshing.
As for the difficulty, I'm honestly happy to hear it. Call me a sissy, but I tend to enjoy rpgs more when they're on the easier side.

Re: What RPG are you playing right now?
If you don't know how to powergame it the game is moderately difficult. If you know all the tricks then it becomes a contest of seeing which of the myriad of ways you can make overpowered characters. The only thing I like to tell people new to it is that due to a bug in the code all attacks are rolled against your magic evasion stat, which means that evasion is useless and darkness doesn't effect you.

Re: What RPG are you playing right now?
That probably has something to do with it, considering I've beaten it like 10 times, lol. Still, I think just like the Materia system, Junctions, etc in other FF's, the fact that later in the game when you can teach all characters ALL magic with ease (it really isn't that grindy at all to achieve this), you're just invincible. Any character can cast Cure 4, buffs, and all that stuff. Then if you really abuse stuff like timing the level ups with certain summons that boost certain stats (ie Odin and Speed!) it can just get ridiculous. I'll never forget my last run on the SNES, I solo power leveled a few characters up to 99 always boosting speed, had Haste Shoes or something on my main party and yeah... I probably could have solo'd the final dungeon with one character or something, lol.
But yeah CFFJR, for a single run I doubt you'll discover some of this junk, even if I just pointed out some of it.
Are any of you familiar with the FFVI fan re-translation though? I kind of stumbled upon it recently, but it sounds hit or miss. Might be worth looking into though. I think the next time I play FFVI though I'm going to refrain from teaching just about everyone magic and just have them with their innate abilities, kind of FFIV style I guess. Might make things a bit more interesting.

Still not very far in Ar Tonelico Qoga.
