It's either broken or impossible, depending on how you play. If you game the system you can be immensely overpowered before you even get the Mithril (and you can to a lesser extent in the GBA version, not sure about the PSP version). If you play through it normally then you'll probably get curbstomped.
Yeah, I don't think I'd want to grind forever to make it doable though, lol. I can definitely see how it'd be very easy with TONS of patience since the system is easy to abuse, but yeah. The fact that you lose stats in that version sounds pretty brutal. I watched some LP of someone playing the last dungeon and he made it look really easy, but he probably did a lot of research and knew what he was doing.
The cave to get the mythril I think was one of the harder dungeons in the PSP version in my run, lol. Overall the game was a fair challenge, but after the mid point or so I was pretty much invincible. Just like most FF's that allow everyone to use magic.
I thought FFV was consistently more of a fun challenge overall. Atmos and the first major battle with ExDeath at his castle were crazy fights. Final boss fight was actually pretty easy though, I grinded a lot though so that probably sums it up. It was kind of like the feeling of me being overpowered by the end of Tactics Ogre (SNES) though, I don't feel like it ruined the fun, my invincible-ness was well deserved after all the stuff I went through (let's just say !RapidFire, !Dualcast summons, and Mime was too much for Neo Exdeath to handle!)
I still can't stop thinking of FFV now. So good! Only took me 3 times to realize that, haha.
