Lodestar wrote:Inazuma, if you wanted a good example of a series that's been "dumbed down," you should've directed everyone's attention to Street Fighter IV or MvC3. Not saying that I agree with your stance at all, but Capcom is the perfect example of a company that has dramatically changed their business model in recent years to adapt to a newer, less-established market, and in the process of doing so, alienated a lot of their older fans that currently aren't too ecstatic about their new(ish) practices.

Anyway, nothing to add about Jobs that hasn't been said already - it STINKS. /Jay Sherman
Street Fighter 4 is way more complicated than street fighter 2. I don't see how this works out as an example at all.

You want dumbed down gaming examples?
Look at Morrowind compared to Oblivion.
Doom 1,2, FD, and 64 compared to Doom 3.
Goldeneye to every PFS to date.
Mass Effect 1 to 2 (yes this is in one GEN but look at the actions to appeal to the shooter crowd.)
Health Packs vs. Regen Health.
Resident Evil 1,2,3,cv,0 to Resident Evil 4,5

Inazuma is right. Once Devs find out that "Casual" games sell great, devs will continue to make on the go/ on the toilet games. Thank God for ebay and local classic game stores.

In this topic, people mistake streamlining with dumbing down.

you can save your game in Super Mario World. You couldn't in Super Mario Bros. 3. Would you say they dumbed down SMW?

Yes. It's long been my opinion that SNES games are simpler and easier than their NES counterparts. This isn't always true (just like today not every game, I think, is easier/simpler/more dumbed down than games of yesteryear), but it largely holds with several franchises.

Streamlining means simplifying a process to increase their efficiency.

For example, overhauling the UI so that you take 3 less clicks to see your items is streamlining.

No. Look at the 16 bit Castlevanias compared to the 8 bit ones. Still hard games just with password saves. Stayed true to the formula.

In SMB3, how many suits and abilities does Mario have in SMB3? How many in SMW? Don't get me wrong, SMW is loads of fun, but SMB3 is the more complex game.
