I updated the OP. Everybody please read it.

I will definitely need help keeping up with registrants and game completion progress.

Sarge wrote:I'm not sure I'd go way harder. Plus, I've been playing Mega Man games for so long that I have no real grasp of difficulty for them anymore. But then, I've also been playing Mario games for so long that the same is true. I mean, SMB3 I can pretty much beat in my sleep, and the game is very generous with extra lives.

The original Mega Man is tough, no bones about it. Play it without the pause trick. :)

I think another consideration that has to be made is how different the three Mario games are on NES. They all control very differently. Mega Man, once you're past the first game's small control quirks, plays pretty much identically throughout all the games, which of course reduces some of the difficulty curve, especially when jumping between games. The first one you play in the series will likely be the hardest.

I'm going to hit on this again, but when folks submit their choices for consideration, it could be very useful to know the hardest game they've beaten so we can suss out relative skill levels. What I find easy and hard is going to vary quite a bit. I play waaaaay too many NES platformers, so games that are easy to me might be soul-crushing for someone else.

I did beat the first Mega Man recently, and without the pause trick. On the other hand, the last time I played Mario 3 I game overed in the sky world. I played both series on NES for the first time as an adult.

I only really struggle with the NES Mario games though. GB and SNES onwards I'm just fine at them

That's fascinating, actually. Guess everyone has games that they're good and not as good at. Especially if you're good at the later games. You won't get me to say Mario 3 isn't challenging, because it is, but I always saw the two as relatively equal.

Mario 3 was changed in the re-releases for SNES and GBA to make it a little easier in places. The original NES game definitely had some challenging levels. But the game is so familiar to so many that it is not as difficult in practice. It also has such a gradual challenge curve that it develops in new players all the necessary skills for the later, more difficult levels. It's one of the beautiful things about SMB3. The level design is some of the best in any game.

Need Dsh and Sarge to be sure they've weighed in on these.

----

Participants, if you're considering the same games other people are, and you've seen those games be vetted by all three judges, there's no need to resubmit them for approval. Just add them to your list with impunity.

Participants, after you've got a vetted list of three games, reply to this thread and say these are the games you're going for. So I can add those games to the master list in the OP by your name, and we know you're ready to go for July.

I can't emphasize enough, though, that the rules (no save states and no guides, etc.) must be followed to the letter for these rankings to apply

I am surprised we haven't seen any 1cc arcade game proposals yet...

I haven't played those, was going off experience with MM1-4. This is why we've got Sarge and Dsh weighing in along with me. The three judge system takes care of this sort of issue. Worst case scenario we just default to Ack's final decision.

God Hand = I defer, but I was considering adding this to my list. I knew a guy who claimed he was a "hardcore gamer" (no really), but he could only beat this game on easy. I hate that dude, and I've been meaning for years to beat this game on at least normal to spite him.

King's Field II = Yes

Eye of the Beholder II = Yes
