RPG's/ARPG's/SRPG's are probably my favorite, especially on the PS1. Though, I do have most of them and I'm looking for just the rest of them and the lesser known ones. For example, I'm looking for Arc The Lad Collection.

I really like the Capcom 2D Fighting Games on the system. I'd love to find Marvel Vs. Capcom, X-Men: Children of the Atom & The King of Fighters series.

I also like racing games. I'm about to play the first Need for Speed game and I want to find Ridge Racer as well.

I'm usually up for any genre, but I'd love some lesser known titles. I know the big names and what is good on the system, but I'm at the point where I am looking for the under the radar titles. The hidden gems on the PS1.

My friend who adored the game loved it on the PC and hated the PS1 port. I'd be very curious to hear if the PC original was much better in regards to the game. There are a ton of good and unique ideas in the game along with it being nostalgic to go back to the original, but I just can't do it. I grew up with the GTA3 games and I just cannot go backwards.

I really wanted to like the game, but it's just not for me. My hunt for a good 'new' PS1 game to play continues.

I played both games on PC and i recall that when i saw the second game running on PS1 on my friends house i was really disappointed how bad the exploding effects were on the PS1 version. It probably looks worse in general but otherwise it's probably the same game.

Alrighty then, I'll try to serve up some decent recommendations for ya Markies.

RPG's/ARPG's/SRPG's are probably my favorite, especially on the PS1.

This is a super fun action-RPG that far too many gamers ignored. It's more action than RPG, but offers branching paths and replayability.


Basically a survival horror RPG. People dismissed it because the battle system is slow (kind of SRPG styled), but if you stick with the game you will be rewarded. Very unique and fantastic experience overall.


This is kinda sort an action-SRPG with a puzzle slant. Such an esoteric game that it's hard to classify. But give it a shot. A dark story and great graphics. You don't have to have played the first two to enjoy this one.


I've not played this but it comes highly recommended from many people. You may be better served playing the translated Grand edition. I plan to play the Grand edition on PSP eventually: https://nicoblog.org/psp/29398/


This is a Fire Emblem clone made by the guy who created Fire Emblem. It's such a direct result that Nintendo sued him and his company. But anyway, you can play it in English: https://www.romhacking.net/translations/1746/


My favorite SRPG series is Front Mission. Here's the best Front Mission on PS1. Granted I don't like it as much as FM4 and FM5 on PS2, but FM3 is still a great time. You don't need to have played FM1 or FM2 to enjoy FM3.

I really like the Capcom 2D Fighting Games on the system.

Well 2D or 3D is equal for me...

Both of these are amazing fighters, even if you don't like the series they're based on. 2D

The Asuka games are another excellent series of ladies fighters. 2D


If you enjoy cel shaded graphics don't miss Slap Happy Rhythm Busters.


Tatsunoko Fight may very well be the most impressive 2D fighter on PS1. It's highly polished either way.

I also like racing games.

My all time favorite racer on PS1. Once you get used to the unique driving model, you'll have a blast.


Very arcadey, VERY Japan, but very very fun.


If you enjoy remote control cars, don't miss this.


Here's a racer where you use planes instead of cars, I think it's unique enough to warrant at least trying.


My second favorite racer on PS1. This is about as good as Ridge Racer ever got. The handling and physics are just perfect.


I don't like Crash as a character, but this is the best kart racer on PS1.


And here's the second best kart racer on PS1. Very impressive graphics too.


A late gen PS1 release that got ignored because it also came out on Dreamcast. Vanishing Point was my own personal Gran Turismo.

Man there are TONS of those if you are into importing (Japan and UK got all kinds of exclusives). Trying to keep it USA domestic though...

If you enjoy pool, don't miss this. Aside from being the best billiards sim on PS1, there's a campaign mode with a story that's so much fun. Also a killer OST. I absolutely adore Backstreet Billiards.


The best third person shooting action you'll find on PS1, with truly outstanding graphics.


Of the three Armored Cores on PS1, this is probably the best and most ignored. I love this series in general, and all three of the PS1 entries are worth your time. Build a mech and blow shit up!


If you enjoy absurdist humor and rhythm games, this is the golden ticket. Also hard as balls and I never finished it. Probably because I suck at rhythm games.


If you need a way to unwind after raging at rhythm games, here's a great choice. This is a game about swimming under the ocean and mapping/cataloging everything. More of a relaxing tool than a game, but started off a whole franchise.


You are the driver! You are the worker! Work hard! Don't screw this up! You're fired!


I haven't played this, but it comes highly recommended from others. If you enjoy mountain biking give it a shot.


Super fun, super slick action game where you bomb the piss outta everything. Gets pretty hard later on. I never finished it back in the day. I plan to remedy that eventually.


This game and its two sequels (also on PS1) are some of the best space shooting sims you could ever hope to play. Amazing graphics, lots of plot choices, replayability out the wazoo, and plenty of challenge.


Super duper fun sequel that many people ignored because they hated the first game. I didn't enjoy the first game either, but I had a bucket of fun with this. Dino Crisis 2 makes some big changes to the original game's formula, and every one of them was for the better. Did you know that Dino Crisis 2 was directed by the man who created the Ace Attorney series? Now you do. Thanks Shu Takumi.


Medal of Honor? How can that be ignored? Well guess what, it was. Blame it on being a late gen release. Blame it on having a female protagonist. Either way, far too many skipped over Underground. And that's a damn shame, because this is the greatest FPS on PS1.

King's Field. Seriously, it's the three King's Field games (and Shadow Tower) on PS1. Nobody ever takes me seriously about these games. People look at the graphics and think the games must be trash. A few people dare to try them, and are instantly turned off by the slow turning speed and hardcore difficulty. Just because something's not IMMEDIATELY fun then it must be junk. It's a goddamn travesty. These are some of the best dungeon crawlers ever made, that offer experiences that feel like true adventures, all while remaining deliciously challenging. Just give one of the games a couple hours and I bet you'll get hooked.

Wow, thank you Exhuminator! Thank you for taking the time and giving me those recommendations. Some of them I have played before and didn't like (Brigandine), but some of those look really interesting. I am going to spend some time and do some research on them.

Dragon Valor is a game I have been interested, but only slightly, so I am glad to hear good things about it.

I actually own Koudelka and will be playing that after I am done with Tales of Destiny. I really want to play it so I can play the Shadow Hearts series.

Front Mission is another series I really want to play, especially the PS2 games.

Crash Team Racing, I have heard is a good Diddy Kong Racing game, which is a plus in my book!

The others, I will look into more deeply, but thank you once again for the help. You gave me many avenues to look into and I'm glad to see my PS1 playing days are far from dead.

I actually own Koudelka and will be playing that after I am done with Tales of Destiny. I really want to play it so I can play the Shadow Hearts series.

I have beaten Koudelka and the first Shadow Hearts. I loved them both. There are references in Shadow Hearts to Koudelka, which would be missed if one hadn't played through Koudelka first. Just keep in mind that Koudelka takes some adjusting to. The first time I played Koudelka I didn't like it at all. Years later I came back (with more patience) and gave it a second chance and had a great time. Just in case you don't know, Shadow Hearts has a completely different battle system than Koudelka. So if you don't enjoy Koudelka's battle system, rest assured the rest of the Shadow Hearts games don't use it.

You gave me many avenues to look into and I'm glad to see my PS1 playing days are far from dead.

The PS1 library is immense. Especially once you start getting into the import scene. (There are still lots of PS1 games I want to beat.) If you ever want more recommendations just hit me up. The PS1 is one of my all time favorite consoles and I can always offer more recommendations. Have fun!

The thing to remember about Dragon Valor is that it's not really a full-scale action-RPG, more of a brawler with RPG elements. I think it's super fun, but it was set up for failure back in the day with folks comparing it to Zelda. Seriously, that's like the kiss of death. Dark Cloud for PS2 suffered the same fate.

Same here. Very very light story and unforgiving gameplay are both things that alone would make me hesitant to stick with a game, but both together is a bit much. Dungeon crawlers in general also really turn me off. That's why I didn't like Dark Cloud, that's why I didn't like Skyward Sword, and that's why I didn't like the Diablo games particularly either. They're games that when I look at them empirically I think I should really enjoy them, but they can never hold my attention through to the end
