Actually, I would say that D's definition of "classic" is even less strict than it probably should be. Think of it in terms of literature: Moby Dick: classic. War & Piece: classic. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest: classic. Benjamin Button: great short story; not a classic. Speaker for the Dead: great sequel to a demi-classic; not a classic.

As I interpret it, Dsh is just having some fun. I don't see it really mattering that every game on everyone's list adhere to the strictest definition of "classic," as evidenced by D's own list.

Oh no, I know he's just having some fun. He does it every year. I'm just having some fun arguing back.

Also, if we were to go on really strict definitions, coming up with 10 games every year would be quite a challenge :P

I am. BUT I'd also like to see people use this challenge to play classics they'd never otherwise touch, genres they ignore, etc. Too many use it solely as a way to tackle a backlog of things they like anyway or games in a series they like. Push yourself, folks!

The problem is that I don't have the money right now to buy more games to play through. I think I've gone out of my comfort zone on occasion with this challenge though - Resident Evil 4 last year and Metal Gear Solid this year are definitely not my normal fair. And I do my best not to throw on loads of modern stuff which makes up a fair bit of my backlog - and when I do (Metroid Prime 3) they've at least been out a while in general.

There are plenty of PC games that are freeware/abandonware that count as unquestionable classics. Money shouldn't be a barrier for the challenge...

This is true. Right now I'm happy with my list, but I guess I'll have to look into something a little different on PC next year. Star Wars Jedi Knight just missed my list this year, but maybe it can join it next year along with something else a little different on PC.

I guess the problem is that I just dont care for a lot of the genres that dominated PC gaming back when. In fact, a list of my least favourite genres would pretty handily cover a lot of early 90s computer gaming. At least if I pick up something free I don't lose anything for trying except time I suppose. My lack of interest is always doubled my mouse and keyboard controls though. Blurgh.

Or perhaps I could finally pick up some stuff for that Commodore 64 and Amiga 500 I have sitting at home.

To support this, I would recommend checking out GOG. There are several free to play games available immediately, including the classic Beneath a Steel Sky.

Whilst that is a great suggestion, I'd hardly be moving out of my comfort zone with that one - I'm quite an adventure game fan already :)

Haha, true! I figured it would be a better suggestion just to throw out to the crowd.

Anyway, jokes aside, I suppose I will create a new list to get me out of my comfort zone:

Donkey Kong Country
Pilotwings
StarFox
ActRaiser
Axelay
NBA Jam
Prince of Persia
Sunset Riders
Yoshi's Island
Chrono Trigger

How does this work, Ds?

I can't stand Axelay and think that it is barely even a cult-classic and ActRaiser is sort of a middling game, but otherwise this list meets with my approval. If you haven't played CT it should be your first choice.
