o.pwuaioc is being like a passive-aggressive Izzy. He also fails to actually back his arguments any better than anybody else. It's sure fun to watch everybody arguing here in this thread and the new games thread though.

Older. Not wiser.

I thought I was going to regret looking in here, and I was wrong.

I think the whole point was not to stop the ostracising titles, but to stop the ostracisingfoxhound1022 wrote:I honestly believe that at this point, all this thread is doing is causing strife. I just think the whole thing is silly, we just need to stop with the ostracizing titles. That's the whole point of this, correct?
I mean, we're arguing the validity of a made-up term.
In an unrelated comment, I found "boybro" hilarious. Thanks Ack!

I understand the side of the argument for people who want to abolish the potential negative connotations of prejudice or petty elitism. Id like to add something that hasn't been addressed in this thread. I think you miss a very important point by focusing your arguments on labels instead of looking at the underlying effect this "dudebro" shit is having on the industry. A group of people I know all play madden, NHL and COD only. I would go hang out with them, it made me think about this kind of gamer before I even heard the term.. in fact one of them had dudebro in his gamer tag. Im not trying to belittle anyone as an individual or for the taste in entertainment... but they have no idea as a group, what kind of damage they are doing to the structure of game production and sales methods. I always hated EA(sports) sequel a year at full price business model, why not release roster updates and make a new engine when you actually can improve upon the last game? Activision and Ubisoft follow suit and start producing sequel a year for the biggest franchises they own(Assassins Creed, COD). When you sell 7 million units a year at full price (+overpriced DLC) and can sell 7 million more next year to the same people regardless of quality or innovation etc... like it or not other companies will copy your model so that they can keep up.
Now a normal semi-casual gamer who wouldn't mind trying something unique but is on a limited budget and has a choice get the games every person he/she knows has or try something different and risk maybe being left with a bad game. Maybe they are not a part of gaming culture that is in the know about all sorts of games, they only know what they see on commercials etc... Now we have development houses being shut down or what have you because the game they developed didn't sell a projected number of units. Before we know it artistic expression is replaced by trends that sell a guaranteed number of units.. Whatever the analysts look at to please shareholders in these massive companies, has no love of expression/art in it, if these trends are any indication.
I thank everything holy for the modern indie developer movements, digital distribution, Youtube, Kickstarter, Humble Bundle, modding communities, Notch, Tim Schaefer (and many other creators who actually try to add something to the industry instead of whoring it out). To me this kind of trending is what we need to honor our favorite pass time, generosity and artistic vision. I dont think that its going to solve the problem by labeling a certain sector of people, but on the other hand if we all have to swim in the same pool id rather not have, many of these 7 million people pissing in it.
Video games are an art form... its a fresh, brand new format of interactive expression that started not long ago. Helpful community trends and encouraging healthy competition and respect should be the name of the game. Instead its sales leaders use cut throat economics and addiction simulators that glorify having no innovation among other things. I don't want to see video games become like the music industry which at the highest sales points is a grotesque charade of actors/pretenders whom most of which don't actually create what they are performing. There is so much music in the world why are only 50 artists or whatever getting to hog all of the spotlight? I dont hate you dudebrahs, I hate the trends of companies that cater to vile practices that your ignorance of the whole picture helps support. Maybe its ego talking but, I think its just that I want to see this culture evolve with honesty of artistic expression. Thank you for posting and reading. -Peace
