Aw man, this thread is worse than a slaughterhouse.

I don't understand why noone here seems to want to understand Inazuma and back him up on the fact that most games have effectively been dumbed down over the last few years. Especially considering this is a retro forum. Seriously... For the most part games ARE dumbed down. Not all of them, but a lot of them anyway. Play PS3, 360 and Wii games for a few months, and then go back to oldschool games. You will know what I mean...

Simplest piece of evidence I can give you: GAMES HAVE GONE MAINSTREAM.

Now combine the previous statement with this: MOST PEOPLE ARE DUMB.

See what I did there?...

Anyways, My top 5 (in no particular order) would be:

- Shigeru Miyamoto
- Yu Suzuki
- Alexey Pajitnov
- John Carmack
- Jordan Mechner

And please, stop this childish bickering. You're all grown men for God's sake...

I just dont agree games are dumbed down. Some games do what the old games couldnt just from a technology standpoint (and no I dont mean graphics).

Are some games dumbed down? sure. Are some games complex? yes as well. There are a ton of shovelware and casual games, but that just means there are more of those, not necessarily less hardcore or complex games.

Also, I believe many of the publishers and companies at that convention are from the casual or mobile market, so their list is a bit skewed.

The short version is that politeness is defined by cultural mores and varies between cultures and groups and contexts. There is no "why" beyond "just because".
In other words, there is no reason. >_>

See, I can understand things like hitting people, insulting them, screaming in their ear, etc to be bad and impolite, but saying "Fuck, my toe." is totally fine. It's the exact same thing as saying "Ow, my toe."
You don't have to understand it. You just have to accept it. Out of all the things you can crusade against, this is not worth the time.

Not all games are dumbed down, they've simply changed as a whole. Many early games gave you the controls for 4 (or maybe only 2) directions and an action button that was often fire or jump. Now we have 3 separate directional controls plus 10 buttons or a free roaming control plus at minimum 103 other buttons possible. Before it was kill or be killed. Now it might be kill, build, amass items, or combinations of those plus others. Before you might have been incapacitated in 1 or a handful of hits, now maybe you can hide behind a rock and feel right as rain.

All you can say is that games are just sometimes... different now.

My main gripe with "core" gaming today is that it focuses on the storyline and the cinematic quality of the levels. The older games that I prefer have level designs that exemplify the game engine's strengths and gradually force the player to master every aspect of the gameplay while still being entertaining. Popular games today tell a story that typically would not make a good novel.

My problem with casual and social games is that they are primarily focused on amusement, not skill based gameplay or action.

These are generalizations of course. But when I have to sort through dozens of games that fit these descriptions to fine the one or two per year that do not I tend to have more interest in collecting for older platforms.

I know I'm late to the party, but holy shit. This list doesn't have Ralph fucking Baer? "Pfft, why should we include the creator of the home video game console on our list?"

This is a good example of how dumbed down some games have gotten lately and how they hold your hand.

Inazuma, if you wanted a good example of a series that's been "dumbed down," you should've directed everyone's attention to Street Fighter IV or MvC3. Not saying that I agree with your stance at all, but Capcom is the perfect example of a company that has dramatically changed their business model in recent years to adapt to a newer, less-established market, and in the process of doing so, alienated a lot of their older fans that currently aren't too ecstatic about their new(ish) practices.

Anyway, nothing to add about Jobs that hasn't been said already - it STINKS. /Jay Sherman
