PS3 slim
Re: PS3 slim
It's the removal of major features which is my major gripe about the system. Plus I'm bitter about Sony constantly giving us the shaft in the UK. At least in Europe the PS3 got a 100 Euro discount. 100 Euro = £86. Why didn't we get at least £75 knocked off? Why? Because Sony doesn't give a shit about the UK hence the only BC version we ever saw was the software one which was barely compatible with anything at release. Then they take the feature away but don't drop the price? Wtf is with that? Now they expect us to pay for a PS3 slim that's got even less features yet they only drop the price by £50. Complete slap in the face. They might as well put a big sticker on it saying "Fuck you UK, we don't want your dirty money!".

I have to agree with Niode - huge international electronics and software giants like Sony and Microsoft should be able to get some software engineers to code BC that runs all but the most troublesome/quirky games. They've both failed, Sony's failure just seems more glaring because they gaveth and taketh away.

That's what I mean. It's like a massive slap across the face. I'm pretty sure if they hadn't included it in the first place the PS3 would be in a better position. They would've been able to introduce it at a much lower price (if they weren't being greedy) and it would've sold tonnes. Ah well, hindsight, 20/20 and all that.

Yeah, I suppose your right. Even so, the emulation that was there was pretty piss poor regardless, which was yet another reason I didn't miss it.
Honestly, if they had just made the PS1 and PS2 emulation region-free just like the PS3 games were, I would have jumped on a BC PS3 ASAP. Otherwise, it doesn't really matter to me.
I'm not really holding my breath for a PS2 emulator hitting the PS3 at all. Even if they patented a whole bunch of crap related to it, doesn't mean anything will come of it. Sure, they'd get some sales out of it, but I highly doubt it would be worth the R&D.
Getting rid of backwards compatibility seems to be the new trend in gaming anyway. Just look at the DSi. When was the last time the 360 got a BC update?

My question for you PS3 gurus is if I put in a PS2 game that needs a multitap for multiplayer, say Gauntlet Dark Legacy or Fire Pro, can I just use 4 dualshock 3's? If so how do I do this?
Most of the games I care to play have no issue with software compatibility as of 2.0 (or so says Sony).
I am quite aware I could just buy another PS2, but I am tempted by the shiny.
Did a quick google, got the following response:
for ratchet deadlocked. i need to play four people online at the same time and am trying to get the third and fourth controller to show up but they wont. what port do they need to be in
you need to re-assign the 2nd and 4th controllers. press the center button, and assign the controller to port 1-C and 1-D, and it should work fine.

I think you're right. BC has ebbed and flowed over the years, but it seems endangered completely right now.
I think the last 360 BC update was late 07 or early 08. They're done with it.
Re: PS3 slim
I think a lot of it has to do with the prime demographic of the PS3/360 this generation. It's the Gamestop kid. The guy who sells all his games back aside from the one or two multiplayer titles. So when the next generation hits he sells all his old shit to buy the new shit.
Then there's the people like us, who never get rid of games en masse just because there's something new out. So we keep our old systems when a generation comes out, thus lessening the value of BC for us.
There's a small group in the middle that didn't have the previous generation's console, but upon purchasing this generation's console they want to try some of the old stuff. And those people tend to be closer to the retrogamer in mindset, so convincing them to buy a dirt-cheap last gen console isn't hard.

I agree completely especially with this point, 90% of our clientele at GS are midless shitfaced drones that just love to get the latest FPS and same rehashed gameplay with a fresh coat of paint regardless of quality or gameplay.

It always makes me sigh when I see the posters in the window at Game stores that say "trade X game for Y for only £15!" when X is a game that came out literally last week and Y is a brand new game. I think to myself, who are these people who buy a game for £40 then trade it back a week later for £25? Are they idiots? Do they just like spending £15 on what is essentially a rental? Wouldn't these people be better off getting a lovefilm (I dont know the alternatives you have for internet unlimited rentals) subscription for £5 a month?
I wouldn't be able to work in Game, I seriously don't know how you do it Mod_Man. I'd just be telling people left right and centre not to waste their money. I couldn't let it slide on a moral ground. I know it makes me seem like a jerk sometimes but I generally know a lot of loopholes or little quirks on how to get things cheaper and I tell everybody I know about it if I know they are paying over the odds for stuff. It seems half the people I advise take my advice and the other half just shrug it off like they just can't be bothered to save money
