I just got a copy of Gradius V the other day and I have started to play it. HOLY HELL! This game is hard! You weren't kidding about getting your butt handed to you. I'm totally loving it though. I've managed to get to level 3 within my first few tries. This game is ridiculous! One of the best shmups I've ever played, at least for the masochist gamer in me.

I've also got a copy of R-Type Final coming in the mail soon.

Go for the lasers, they tend to make things more accesible when you make them do a wavy motion to hit more enemies all over the screen. Its also a great 2 player shmup, if it wasn't for my skillful friend I probably would have never finished it.

Despite my love of shmups, I'm certainly not fantastic at them. However I didn't find Gradius V quite as hard as everyone here seems to be making out.

It is definitely one of my favourite horizontal shooters. Generally I avoid them and stick with vertical, but this is a damned fine title.
