Better mechanics, the radar wasn't broken as all get out, and it wasn't so annoying rigid and angering with the time clock either. Can't speak to multiplayer, not my thing and don't have the broadband for it, but agree otherwise on those. And Cubivore I dared to grab when it was new, not a regret, love the Cubist style of it all and the purpose, intent and play of that game is just fantastic.
I don't, the first Pikmin game was way better imo.

The first pikmin was a strategy game. The second pikmin was an action game.

In pikmin 1, you're managing limited resources. You only have 30 days, and you have a definite number of things to obtain in that time. You have to think about where you're going and what you'll need, and make mental notes to come back with different pikmin for something else tomorrow. If you lose a large swathe of pikmin, it's a big setback - your troops are important because if you lose them, it's time wasted not only fetching more troops, but potentially growing replacements - who will not have flowers, and thus will be slower. If you want to be super efficient, it actively encourages you to multitask (3 is even better at this mind)

It's also a much better world builder. The pikmin 1 world feels alive - the creatures are weird but feel mostly natural, the environment you explore is covered in flowers and grasses and looks like a garden.

Pikmin 2 on the other hand, is an action game. The vast majority of the gameplay takes place in underground caverns, where the main goal is to explore and take out enemies. Enemies are basically the main hazard of the game here, whereas time was in the original. Yes, the boss fights are tough and the game is fun - but there's no more strategy here than there is in most action games in my eyes, because your resources aren't nearly as limited. You have unlimited time, it doesn't matter if you only find one thing a day or you lose 100 pikmin and have to grow more, or anything like that, because all you lose is a bit of time preparing more, with no actual in-game detriment associated. All that matters is that you don't lose all of your troops at once or wipe out - just like losing a life in an action game.

In addition, the cave environments you spend 90% of the game in are super abstract and don't feel part of a real world at all. Lots of metal tunnels with metallic enemies on balloons and similar.

I like Pikmin 2. But I ADORE Pikmin 1. And Pikmin 3 I also love. I think it's noteworthy that with the 3rd game they took a lot more from the ideas of the first title than the second.

That is fair AlienJesus. Pikmin 1 is far more of a strategy game, and I approached it as an action game. That must be why I enjoy 2 far more. Well that and Coop.

Same here can't argue that, it is a strategy game and I'm not a fan of the genre much as you get stuck into whatever tunnel vision strategy a designer comes up with as most games don't encourage finding many ways to the same solution. I do stand by the radar being god awful though, entirely unhelpful when it won't even pop up necessary information you need on it. I remember that ultimately more than time being the second driving me away from it and selling it off.

A lot of the stuff got ported to the Wii and a few even got updated with the "New Play Control" releases.
I looked up that Wiki, did not know Chibi Robo (have Gamecube version) came out on the Wii. Curses, a Japan only release on the Wii.

The game play on both are great though I hated the clock running out on the Pikmin 1. Have Gamecube and Wii renditions of both as well as version three ready if I ever get a WiiU. Like the lock on feature of the Gamecube version as well as the Wii instant aim (though you have to keep aiming) of the Wiimote.

I have to admit this thread is making me want to do naughty things like you know, buy Gamecube games and use it again. Total distraction since I've just got back into Dreamcast. Worst thing ever is to be spread too thin then nothing gets enjoyed. I used to have a wide variety of third and first party games for it. Poor system was helped along by the media to fall into third just because they didn't have a pay network for suckers (which is what it was for the original xbox back then) which the media just got wood over entirely.

Could always just use a Modded wii and not have to worry about faulty discs. A lot of the used stuff floating around anymore is in pretty shit shape honestly unless your willing to shell out some cash. Not many places have the accessories needed to properly resurface game cube discs either so piss poor jobs and cracked inner rings is pretty common.

I will say Gamestop has some pretty solid deals on stuff as long as you don't mind loose discs. free shipping on orders over $25 and the occasional sales bundled with that lovely CAG16(16% off) promo code that has been around forever makes for some pretty stellar deals. Plus on occasion you actually get a case or manual or if your really lucky both.

I just pay up for CIB games for any CD/DVD/disc format -- I know if the outside is good, odds are very good someone actually wasn't a bitch thug with their property and the disc should have minimal to no wear. It's about respect and odds are the more commonly thrown or thrown apart parts look solid the game usually is too.

I'm going through it now on Dreamcast, the hell I'll buy a loose disc, they're quite touchy being double density CDs (GDROMs) as you get one funky scuff or scrape deep enough and it's lights out. Right after picking it up I turned down a decent stack of a few games as they looked questionable to rotten. I could have buffed them out some, but it was a gamble at the prices desired. Yet last Saturday I paid $5 for a Super Magnetic Neo that looked a bit potentially sketchy but I buffed it out by hand with my pinball novus kit and boom, ran like a champ.

I still own a GameCube, I've still got a dozen or so games for it I haven't beat yet. Although I've sold quite a few 'Cube games off in the last two years, to take advantage of the ridiculous prices they bring in. (I only sold games I already beat though.)

'Cube games I've loved...

F-Zero GX
Lost Kingdoms
Lost Kingdoms II
Metroid Prime
P.N.03
Skies of Arcadia: Legends
Super Smash Bros. Melee
Soulcalibur II
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Viewtiful Joe
PLAY KING'S FIELD.

Other than Lost Kingdoms 2 I've had all of those, didn't like the first one so I didn't jump on the other.

Currently I've got 20 games, 3 are imports though as I kept a Top20.
Hudson Selects Bonk and Star Solider, along with PAL Doshin the Giant are the non-US run using a Freeloader disc. I don't have it now but I did have Lode Runner (blah) and Castle of Shikigami 2 (great) for imports too a couple years back.

Chibi Robo, Cubivore, Defender, Eternal Darkness, F-Zero GX, Ikaruga, LOZ: Four Swords Adventures, LOZ Twilight Princess, LOZ Wind Waker, Luigis Mansion, Mario Golf, Mario Kart, Starfox Assault, Super Mario Sunshine, Star Wars Rogue Squadron 2, Super Smash Bros Melee, and Tales of Symphonia is what I've held onto.

At one time or another and this is using that nintendo, wikia site by year of release I try here to recall anything I ever bought and played for it not listed above.

01: Batman Vengeance, Crazy Taxi, Pikmin, SSX Tricky, Super Monkey Ball, Wave Race

02: Animal Crossing, Baldurs Gate, Beach Spikers, Bloodrayne, Capcom vs SNK 2 EO, Dr Muto(played working at Midway), Evolution Worlds, Gauntlet Dark Legacy, Godzilla DAMM, 007 Agent Under Fire, 007 Nightfire, Lost Kingdoms, Medal of Honor Frontline, Metroid Prime, Mystic Heroes, Namco Museum, NHL Hitz 2002(another I worked on), Phantasy Star Online Ep 1&2, Resident Evil, Robotech Battlecry, Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Mega Collection, Spy Hunter, Star Fox Adventures.

03: Beyond Good & Evil, Bust-A-Move 3000, Medal of Honor Rising Sun, Mega Man Network Transmission, PN 03, Pac-Man vs, Prince of Persia Sands of Time, Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil Code Veronica X, Skies of Arcadia Legends, Sonic Adventure DX, Soul Calibur II, Star Wars Rogue Squadron III Rebel Strike, The Legend of Zelda Collectors Edition, The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time/Master Quest, The Sims Bustin Out, True Crime Streets of LA, Tube Slider, Viewtiful Joe, Wario World

04: Call of Duty Finest Hour, Custom Robo, Donkey Konga, FF Crystal Chronicles, Goldeneye Rogue Agent, James Bond Everything or Nothing, Mega Man Anniv Collection, Metal Gear Solid Twin Snakes, Paper Mario 1000Yr Door (only recently not back then), Pikmin 2, Serious Sam Next Encounter, Sonic Heroes, Wario Ware Inc

05: Battalion Wars, Call of Duty 2 Big Red One, Fire Emblem, Gun, Killer 7, Lego Star Wars, Medal of Honor European Assault, Pinball Hall of Fame Gottlieb Ed, Resident Evil 4, Sonic Gems Collection

06: Tomb Raider Legend

That's probably 90-95% right I know I'm forgetting something.

At one time I had about 65 GameCube games, almost all of them exclusives. I bought a bunch of 'Cube games during 2007-2008, when they were at their cheapest. The most expensive 'Cube games I still have are mint condition copies of Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II. I'd have no problem selling them, but not until I beat them first.
