I appreciate everyone's suggestions so far. I know I've played the original Zork but never beat it. If I was going to go the text adventure game route, I might choose Colossal Cave Adventure, and I still might.
As for the old CRPGs, really loving the links. The two games that I think look the most interesting are Orthanc and Beneath Apple Manor. I am really impressed with Orthanc considering its age and hardware:
I'm not quite sure how to play Orthanc in an emulator. I looked at the link Fast supplied but it wasn't immediately obvious how to make it work. I will figure it out of course.
I got an Apple II version of Beneath Apple Manor to run in an emulator just fine today. Trouble is, I don't know which version I was running, insofar as the actual release date is concerned. I want to play the original 1978 version of it. The game is supposed to be public domain now, so if anyone can provide the 1978 version that is for sure the original, I'd be greatly appreciative.
Again I appreciate all replies so far. I've actually been impressed with how complex some of these RPGs and adventure games already were before I was even born. Granted to play a lot of them you needed to be a college kid at a university with a badassed mainframe at the time.
