I appreciate everyone's suggestions so far. I know I've played the original Zork but never beat it. If I was going to go the text adventure game route, I might choose Colossal Cave Adventure, and I still might.

As for the old CRPGs, really loving the links. The two games that I think look the most interesting are Orthanc and Beneath Apple Manor. I am really impressed with Orthanc considering its age and hardware:

I'm not quite sure how to play Orthanc in an emulator. I looked at the link Fast supplied but it wasn't immediately obvious how to make it work. I will figure it out of course.

I got an Apple II version of Beneath Apple Manor to run in an emulator just fine today. Trouble is, I don't know which version I was running, insofar as the actual release date is concerned. I want to play the original 1978 version of it. The game is supposed to be public domain now, so if anyone can provide the 1978 version that is for sure the original, I'd be greatly appreciative.

Again I appreciate all replies so far. I've actually been impressed with how complex some of these RPGs and adventure games already were before I was even born. Granted to play a lot of them you needed to be a college kid at a university with a badassed mainframe at the time. Still it's all very impressive.

I still want to play Orthanc, but I haven't found an easy way to do it yet. Or I'm just being ignorant. If anyone knows a really easy way to play Orthanc (offline preferrably) please tell me.

In the meantime, I've decided in the interest of time to go with beating a pre-1979 Atari 2600 game. I have picked out these as candidates:

I'm not exactly sure what will constitute as having "beaten" any of them. But I think Slot Racers is pretty well defined:

"The object of the game is to pilot your car through a maze, while attempting to fire missiles at your opponent's car, as well as evading the missiles your opponent fires at your car. Each time one of the respective cars is struck by a missile, the player controlling the other car receives one point. Victory is achieved through the scoring of twenty-five points. " - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slot_Racers

So I'm going to give that a shot.

Also I've realized that I've barely scratched the surfaced of what Atari had to offer. Not just in 2600, but also 5200 and 7800. I am ashamed. Please do not tell Bone.

Combat is best in multiplayer. Find someone to play with and crush them. Prove that you are a Lord of War.

I'm a little rusty on my Atari launch titles, but a couple of those may be two-players only. This was common back in that era - several Odyssey 2 and Intellivision launch games are the same way.

Yeah I just tried Slot Racers and that seems to be the case. Looks like it'd be fun in two player mode though.

I'll try the others.

Star Ship is probably your best bet for a single-player game.

the 78 version is often called the Lores or Lofi version, it looks like this:

You can get the DOS version from the creator:

But it is not the 78 version, it is the 83 one - same as Internet Archive.

I will dig through my Apple 2 roms later, what format do you need it in?

Well guys I beat Hangman, a game older than I am, and reviewed it in the games beaten thread. I'm still gonna check out some other games talked about in this thread regardless. Thanks for all suggestions.
Thanks for the link. Well, I tried that one last week, and I couldn't tell if it was the 78 version or not. The screen doesn't have a year printed on it. Rather it shows a hacktro splash screen of all things:

Are you sure this one is the legit 78 version?
