Happy thought, you have goddamn GOOD taste in PC games. :D As much as I truly loved Tie Fighter (and X-Wing a bit less) as far as space shooters go back in the day (and still ever since) I always enjoyed Wing Commander 1 and 2 more (with their addon pack goodies.) I still own (though been trying to sell) the Kilrathi Saga, probably just should pull and keep the thing. While I do have the GoG releases, there's this dude working on repairing the binaries, installs, and stupid bugs over on the Wing Commander CIC forums. He got WC1 entirely fixed. The dumb bugs where the music gets looped/messed up, or the planets from the DOS version have vanished among others are all fixed, kind of makes it a definitive version and works in modern DirectX finally bringing back this broken gem.

Probably should watch it, next thing I'll notice myself re-installing and getting lost which may not be a bad thing.

Found it, if anyone has Kilrathi Saga -- http://www.wcnews.com/chatzone/threads/ ... ows.27685/

When NWC went down, Goldeneye servers (and COD) still remained active...and i think it still is. I just played it a few months ago.

I have the HD version on 360 and I thought they did a fantastic job with it. It's a really cool re-imagining of Goldeneye in the Daniel Craig-verse Bond style.

Unfortunately all of the Activision-made James Bond games have disappeared from digital storefronts along with their online support since they lost the license. That really sucks. At least it's still got four player split-screen as it should.

Blood Stone was another really fun modern Bond game that needed a sequel.

TIE Fighter is my second favorite space sim, though my next favorite science fiction sim in general is probably MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries. I still have my complete big box copy of that from childhood. My TIE Fighter floppies ended up lost to time somewhere but no matter because GOG has the 1995 Collector's CD release now which is awesome.

Wing Commander 2 holds a special place in my formation as a gamer because it was the first game I ever played with such an engrossing story and since I played it before I played the first one it was the first game for me to truly bring dreams of flying a starfighter in Star Wars or Battlestar Galactica to life. I ultimately ended up loving Wing Commander's lore and universe even more than those.

Kilrathi Saga used to sell for boatloads back when it was the easiest way to play the game without having to own a DOS machine but with DOS Box and GOG the price really crashed. It is however probably the absolute best way to play the original game, I agree.

Here's a happy story.

Tonight I laid in bed with one of my PSPs, playing King's Field III: Pilot Style on it.

Although that's a PS1 game, PSX2PSP means it's a PSP game if I want it to be. That alone makes me happy. But there's more.

What really made me happy tonight, was how much fun I had in just one hour with Pilot Style. In one measly hour:
(Warning: Spoilers Galore)
I was introduced to a story with a complex narrative.
The narrative got right to the point and the game started.
Bam here I am surrounded by vile darkness, where do I go?
The game doesn't tell you where to go. Have fun!
I got what, a dinky sword and some leather boots?
So I traversed a cursed landscape full of man eating flora.
Just asshole plants trying to eat your face.
I explored ruins and found treasures... equipment, magic aids, a strange golden ring.
Lots of water around here, stay out of it, you drown yo.
I investigated dilapidated houses that turned out to be haunted.
But they had treasure chests in them. Gettin' rich quick.
Off in the distance... some trees and bushes?
Oh I found a cavern hidden behind the bushes.
I explored the cavern, which was a recursive maze, that I solved no sweat.
In the cavern I found more treasure, fought giant insects, and bought equipment off a crazy dwarf.
He had nice prices but I assume bad breath.
Shortly after, I found a grave robber who told me he didn't care about my life.
He really didn't care. So rude.
I gave that old ring to a crazy lady on a rocking chair.
The crazy lady gave me a key. Not telling you where it goes says the game.
The key opened up a treasure chest I found hidden nearby.
The treasure chest gave me a magic artifact.
Looks pretty neato.
What does it do? The game doesn't say.
It opened the entrance to a dungeon.
Lookin' scary down thurr
The dungeon was massive, full of deadly traps, treasure, monsters and pitfalls.
Freaking giant spike balls of death swinging everywhere.
Oh, hidden switches turn them off.
I found a graveyard in the dungeon. It was haunted!
I found a moonstone hidden in a grave. It gave all my magic points back.
Magic fire toasts skeletons, we're good here.
Eventually I navigated a narrow maze over a pitfall while baddies hurled bad magic at me.
I fought a boss who was hard as nails, and I barely beat it, thanks to copious stocking of herbs I bought off the reclusive dwarf.
You know that feel when you just barely beat a boss, and there's so much to lose?
I got that feel.
So good.
I killed the boss.
I got the Moonlight Sword. Oh yeah!
I beat the game.
Dear From Software, I love you.
I think it's awesome that in less than an hour, I had a full on memorable adventure. Compared to modern JRPGs that can take up to three hours before you even have your first battle, that's pretty damn rad. And it makes me happy.
PLAY KING'S FIELD.

Sometimes I plug my Comix Zone cartridge into my Sega Genesis and connect my stereo just so I can listen to the groovy music. It makes me smile. Then I usually follow up with Streets of Rage 2.

Mmm...tunes.

Have you ever played A Dark Room? The cost to purchase it is nominal, and after reading your story, I think you would like it. (Don't ask me why...The game really isn't that much like King's Field...At all. I still think you would like it, though.)

I have not, but reading about it, it sounds interesting. I'll nab it.

Oh I found a high res scan of the Pilot Style packaging.

Just seeing that makes me happy.

Game is for free on Android, recently released, just has a small ad bar at the bottom. Also the maker of the iOS one has created a much more sadist and challenging prequel/sequel (forget which) for that game as well.

It's called the Ensign, also a 99 cent game on iOS only for now.
