I don't type correctly with my right hand

I type with every finger constantly, even with my pinky fingers. I got used to this because I used to play acoustic guitar religiously and would always finger pick with every finger.

I always imagine you typing with some psychic sunglasses.

While growing up, teachers encouraged me to do everything with one hand, from tying shoes to typing to even eating. I was around eight or nine when I told them to get back to me when they have one hand. It was condescending as all get out, even to a young child. Really stupid as well as they set limitations instead of presenting challenges. Remember that episode of the Simspons where Homer goes on disability for being too fat and an operator says "Your fingers are too fat too dial"? It felt like that.

I was told to type with only my right hand, fingers on "dfgh". Bad advice. I can type like a programmer who is in a hurry to meet a deadline.

So Erick Double, don't ask what works for others, find out what works for you. Many tasks don't have crisp answers, and you have to find out the answer for yourself. My right hand alone can stretch from Caps lock to Enter, but that might not be an option for you.

Like music, practice. Keep typing and define your style. There is no "correct" way to type. Chin up.

Typing of the Dead isn't a bad suggestion. It throws in a lot of punctuation, so it's pretty well rounded. Although, it's only English and Japanese, so that won't help you with French or Spanish. At least it gives you motivation. If you don't type correctly with enough speed... YOU'RE DEAD!!! If you don't have a Dreamcast with keyboard, the PC version isn't too expensive.

I'm with Luke, find what works best for you. I took a basic typing class in middle school, so I once learned the basics of the "proper way" to type. I took a lot from that, and it was a great starting point, but I do a lot of my own things. Everyone's fingers are different. If the book told me to use a certain finger for a certain key, but it was uncomfortable for me, then I would just come up with my own thing. By now it's all muscle memory. Just find a way that you can comfortably use all your fingers and reach every key, stay consistent and practice.

The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.

That's a sentence that contains every letter in the English alphabet. It's useful for a lot of things. For practicing typing, you can use the sentence to identify which letters you have trouble with. Type the sentence out as quick as you can. Identify where you slowed down and where you had typos. Those are the keys you have to focus on fixing.

If you could get ahold of one of the typing programs they use for school children, those can be really helpful. We had varying levels of those all throughout my school career, and that got me to where I am today. I don't know what my speed is, but I imagine I break 90 words a minute when I'm really busting it out, and that includes me using improper strokes for certain keys, including C, Z, and X.

I'm in your camp, Bogus. But I would say the best way to learn is like I did: using a 2400 baud modem in the age of 28.8k, on a twenty node bbs that started buffering chat as soon as your first keystroke occurred because DOS. Trial by fire!

But y'know, barring a time machine, your suggestion is solid too.
