Marathon 2 netplay (local network only, of course) was a BLAST. As much fun as Halo matches and definitely more interesting and varied than Doom or Doom 2 lan play
I have only played the first Halo, and the game absolutely flawed in many ways, but it was fun and introduced a lot of neat ideas that really became the norm for many games since. It made it easier to engage in battle because you didn't have 10 weapons to juggle, but it also made it possible to make out-of-combat tactical decisions related to what you thought you were going to encounter. Pair up the sniper rifle and rocket launcher and you were definitely going to be swapping out for an alien's gun early in the fight.
And it's really interesting to see the influence of Marathon. Makes me wish the new independent Bungie would revisit the Marathon universe. Would love to see the series re-invented as an FPS/RPG as your Mjolner acquires upgraded code and abilities from Leila, Durandal, Tycho, or even the ancient alien AIs. It could be very Deus Ex, but with much snappier action and much creepier and darker.

I'm not really sure, but The first one, and Reach.
