That's not true, as long as Sonic can transform you'll get the Doomsday Zone and the final boss. Sonic 3 isn't needed.

You can even get it with only 7 emeralds in Sonic 3 & Knuckles if you stay out of big rings once you get to Mushroom Hill (since entering a special stage will deposit all of your Chaos Emeralds in Hidden Palace Zone and take away the Super Sonic transformation).

The only requirements for Doomsday Zone are playing as Sonic and having either transformation available at the end of the game.
Huh, learn something new every day.

I have Sonic & Knuckles but don't have Sonic 3. I was thinking about applying a patch using my Retron to play Sonic 3 Complete:
Sonic 3 Complete is a hack of Sonic 3 & Knuckles which aims to provide a much improved variant of the original game, with many new options and features, without straying from the original levels or gameplay. The inclusion of separate modes for Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles and Blue Sphere also make this a close cousin of the PC compilation Sonic & Knuckles Collection, albeit designed for the original 16-bit hardware.
Has anyone tried this out? Should I play the game as Sonic # & Knuckles or just play my plain old Sonic & Knuckles cart?

Sonic 3 Complete is cool. It gives you the normal experience if you want it and lots of additional stuff to toy around with.

interesting.

I was actually considering buying that Sonic & Knuckles PC collection so I could play vanilla S&K instead of S3&K...

what are the rules for this one? Play just Sonic and Knuckles, Sonic 3K or all the possible permutations?

I'm inclined to play just S&K, it's been quite a while since I did it that way.

Emulating on my Wii, never really had any patience for any of the sonic series for some reason. I'm ready to give it another go though. Never beaten any of the games lets see if I can stick with it this time.

Played S&K for about an hour tonight and then quit. Usually I love the popular and critically-acclaimed games - Mario, Zelda, Final Fantasy, whatever - but I just can't stand this one. The level design, controls, everything about it is just so off-putting. I feel like I'm playing a different game than everyone else. Ah well. Onward to Secret of Mana.

I came here to make a very similar post after playing for a half hour.
