I've only been married about six months but we've lived together 2 years and we keep all our money separate and split everything. If your income is similar it's the way to go.
The SMS is an OK system if you get the right games. There are a lot of duds for it, though. I found the system a bit hard to get into, frankly, but that doesn't mean it can't be worthwhile.
