I think these are straight up Wii Releases so like VC games require a control scheme similar to the past (like the Classic Controller for SNES games).

My understanding is that it's playable on the GamePad if the game originally supported the Classic Controller. So Trilogy probably doesn't, or at minimum it requires the remote + nunchuk, which really doesn't improve things over the current vWii mode.
As far as physical copies are concerned, I'd just hack the Wii at this point and install a flash drive or something. That's what I finally did, and it's pretty awesome. I also snagged a spare Wii, although I paid double what mjmjr25 would have.

If this doesn't give me added functionality over popping the disc in, I guess I'm out too. I just want to play Wii games on the pad. It is by far the worst-designed aspect of the system

check your local craigs - I grabbed a bundle of 4 games and a system (as another backup) for $25. People are unloading them - if you can avoid shipping it, $10-15 is about right.

Ah, that's a little closer to what I paid. $26 total for two games, system, three Wii remotes and a nunchuk. In really good shape, too. Had to figure out how to unlock the parental controls (not that hard, apparently), and then I did the full hack job. It was even an earlier model, so I installed BootMii in boot2.

Meh... I own the collector edition disc in SteelBook case, and am content to pay $10 just so that I don't need to take the disc out when I want to play. Prices are very low now between extra stock and the digital release, but will probably creep back up (at least for the collector version) so $10 for safe, convenient access that doesn't use the optical drive is ok by me.
Fully understand the other view though. If I didn't already own the collector edition disc I would also be buying physical while prices are low.

Likewise. If I could play this strictly on the pad, I'm in for $9.99.

Fairly certain there won't be pad support because this is not a WiiU game - it is a vWii game.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?
