I was just comparing the two versions that were contemporary.

As for the PSP it's missing the award winning voice acting.

Well, the PS1 version is definitely more of a visual treat, but I enjoy playing the Saturn version better. The controller on the Saturn helps, but it is those little gameplay tweaks that really make the difference.

And yes, Ziggy, you are right. The game was originally built on an engine designed to do 2D using a traditional 3D renderer. I think when the game was ported it simply kept the same mode instead of getting a redesigned engine built to do mostly 2D and playing to the Saturn's strengths. Instead, SoTN is the Saturn trying very hard to be a Playstation.

Ah, the PSP version. Yes, it's a great version. Also, the only official English translation of Rondo. And they both have matching voice acting. I'd definitely call it the definitive version, but only if it was released on a console and not just a handheld. Such a shame.

They need to do HD remakes of SOTN and the 3 GBA games and release it on PSN for the PS4, and of course release it in physical format in Japan so I can import it because we know damn well we wouldn't ever get a physical release of it.

I REALLY need to unlock the psp version. I've never really given it a fair shake -- whenever I want to play Rondo I usually just fire up the TGCD, so I haven't gotten around to beating it on the psp yet.

I should also import/burn Saturn SOTN to try it out. I never got into playing as Richter, but I want to try Maria, and I'd love to see the "new" area, considering I beat the everliving crap out of it on PS1.
Gunning for a licensed NES NTSC-U set, follow the madness and poverty here!
Cheat sheet of my collection, always looking to increase it. 405/677 licensed games, 46/"95" unlicensed

The Saturn version has horrible slowdown. Also the sprites and backgrounds are pre-scaled in the worst way (pixel scaling - every few pixels there's a duplicate to make them wider - 240 to 320). There's no alpha transparency even. Everything that was transparent is 50% dithered. It's got new stuff but even the developers made an apology in text on the CD.
to quote an old babelfish translation in something like engrish:
As for Saturn development when it was unprecedented, to the place that
in connection with development period, the efficiency of hard is
pulled out, the fact that it is not possible is regret, but (even then
it inhaled and the ぶ it is was late (the tear)) as a degree of
transplantation we think whether tolerably is not.
You can try to read the full developers notes here if you find the bad translation as endearing as I do (Google's transator would do better than babelfish did in 2002)

In short, the KCEN programmers struggled with the tight schedule and failed.

I pull out the Saturn Version just when I want to do a Richter or Maria playthough, since it is automatically unlocked from the start.

ugh, when combined with the extra time the XRGB mini spends switching resolutions it's a hassle accessing the map in this version, which is a shame because otherwise i'm okay with the lack of transparencies/etc for the most part

I disagree, Metroidvania is perfectly suited to handheld gameplay :). I played SoTN on the PSP and I loved it. Never even bothered with the main game after I unlocked SoTN
