Dynamite Deka is great on the ps2. It even has the Saturn version added in (weird to see a "Saturn" mode in a ps2 game)
The Sega Ages Tetris collection is great, mostly for its "New Century" take on Tetris, which is essentially Tetris: The Grand Master Home Edition
Shmups are hard to recommend. Not sure if you use Mame, if you have a preference towards classics or modern, etc. The system is loaded with shooters though.
Melty Blood is a fantastic fighter by the guys that did Guilty Gear. The Darkstalkers collection is another goodie.
Pretty much anything Beatmania on the ps2 will need to be imported. Its pricey, but Empress is great.
Final Fantasy X International has an option for English (unlike X-2 and XII), but with the HD release that one may or may not be worth looking into.
Oh, and since you have a ps2, get God Hand. Its not an import, but that's okay.

I guess by "Shmups" you mean 2D scrolling arcade style? If that's the case, here are some PS2 shooters in that vein that are both good and Japanese only:BenG76 wrote:Any other suggestions?

As far as good English friendly Japanese imports for PS1 and PS2 go, that's a very broad topic. You'd have to narrow it down more to what you're really interested in.
For me personally, I enjoy these Japanese PS2 games via English fan translations:

And of course the greatest Japanese PS2 import of all time:
PLAY KING'S FIELD.

If you enjoyed the manga/show- Berserk: Millennium Falcon (yes that is the actual title lol) was an excellent game and made HUGE improvements over the DC one which was mediocre at best.
