Just pointing out that the only reason Birdo is trans is because Nintendo thought it'd be an amusing character quirk. It definitely wasn't an attempt at being inclusive. NoA has also made a very pointed effort to downplay her gender.

True and Birdo is not even human. I wasn't trying to imply they were trying to be inclusive of transgender persons only that there is one. It was my subtle way of mentioning there is more to diversity than just PoC.

Sorry, but he has TWO (three kinda) games, and the second one involves him chatting up women.

He's camp, but he's probably straight.

Obviously game are where we go to escape reality, not think politics or socially correct approaches to issues.

The idea of a Japanese game company making a fat Italian plumber their mascot probably wouldn't go over so well these days. (They'd be accused of stereotyping against either Italians, or plumbers) but I guess in the 80s the world hadn't lost its mind yet.
They have escaped into the mansion where they thought it was safe, yet.

Better representation of minorities and greater diversity doesn't take anything away, and it brings plenty to the table, especially for members of the groups being represented.

The same can be said for Poison, arguably the most famous transgender character in video games. She's officially transgender only in the United States because Capcom thought it was more acceptable to beat up a transgender woman than a non-transgender woman.
