Blue bomber man is so awkward looking. And red bomber man didn't throw the bomb at you, he just stared at you defiantly and dropped it like a boss.

The art used on that custom Metroid cover is by Ivan Flores. Has some nice art, some meh art, but some NSFW as well in case one goes looking.

 Yeah, I love the photo-realistic face behind the shield of a derpy looking cartoon bomber suit too. I just have so many questions for the artist behind that one.

I seriously wonder wth were they thinking with the North American cover. I can understand Japanized/Westernized characters on cover art, but why the fuck would you pick a moogle over that piece of art?! Not that the NA cover is insultingly bad or anything, but the Japanese cover is so great that it just doesn't make any sense to alter it.
Xeogred already posted it but Secret of Mana is also amazing

I think I've noticed some common trends in video game box art, in the early days it was all about characters being chased by enemies in the game:

(also see JT's post)

Followed by characters popping out of things like the cool aid man:

And somehow it got to pictures of guys lookin cool holding guns:

And of course there was the transition period between the last two:

And if you want to go back to the Atari it was always realistic spaceships often shooting at some kind of alien. Speaking of that I'd like to see some Atari art on this thread, that one had some great stuff!
