The difference is that the valuable Atari games are genuinely rare. I have seen multiple copies of Eartbound and Metal Warriors in the wild, but I very much doubt that I will ever see the comparably priced Sinistar prototype at a flea market. Atari games that are as common as Earthbound and Metal Warriors sell for a fraction of the price, and when the dust settles, I think that rarity will determine which games retain their value. (In other words, the demand is currently driving SNES prices, but when demand shifts back down, supply will determine prices.)

That said, Metal Warriors is a fun game. I was able to pick up a copy a few years ago for less than $20, and I have been pleased with my purchase.

The only thing I wonder is that NES SNES is more mainstream than Atari. Atari was kinda the dawn of home console gaming then it had way too much crap released that was low quality and clones of other games and the markets crashed.

I see SNES staying up to some extent. Noone I talk too even in my Retro circles says how much they love some Atari game. But bring up SNES classics and people go on and on. FF III Super Mario RPG EB etc. SNES was one of the greatest consoles of all time. I know people always say their time was the best, but I see even younger kids playing tons of SNES classics emulated or buying the old consoles and games etc. A couple of my younger friends will only play 16 bit up to about Dreamcast and their 360s etc gather dust. I have never seen someone try and get a Atari 2600 emulator or play one and get crazy excited that didnt grow up with it. Seems it was just to early to have what the 8-16bit era brought in gaming before it became so mainstream casual.

While I feel the 16 Bit stuff is hot right now due to people growing up with it now having jobs and the money to collect it all again, I dont see it crashing down to 5$. I dont feel that 8-16 bit will just be forever forgotten once the retro thing gets bored. These systems have some of the best games ever made on them and I believe they are classic. This was really a Golden Age of gaming I wonder if we will ever see again with the AAA and casual gamers taking over everything.

Just my thoughts would love any input you guys have.
