Purging files/programs from a PC?
Re: Purging files/programs from a PC?
Does CCleaner even run on a computer that old?

This is the sort of question you shouldn't ask, for you might not like the answer.AznKhmerBoi wrote:Are there such things as bad porn collection? lolAck wrote:Is it at least a good porn collection?

Ah, youth. Wait until you see bad porn. The fake cries, the horrible lighting, the hodgepodge editing... you imagine the worst part being the costumes, and then they bring out the puppet show.AznKhmerBoi wrote:Are there such things as bad porn collection? lol
But for BoneSnapDeez: Take an image of the drive just in case and then start borking up the registry yourself, hoping Win98 can self-correct itself the next reboot.
Actually, considering this is a laptop and unable to use high-end 128-bit Creatives and Rolands, what's the point in keeping the OS unless you've got a collection of 9x games?
(I'm also with Rya -- what are the system specs?)

You should definitely format it. There's no telling what sort of cruft and trail of broken things are in the OS at this point. Look at the hardware and find 95/98 drivers for all of it before you nuke. Then format, install fresh, and install whatever the last service pack is, the drivers you have, and of course don't let it near the internet.

Yeah I guess seeking out a copy of Win 98 is my best bet after all. Might see if I can snag a disk from one of my professors.
Oh, and the porn isn't that great. It's all 1990s-era stuff, so it's kinda neat from a historical standpoint I guess.
The most hilarious part is that you can tell the husband tried his best to "hide" it all from his wife simply by burying it in folder after folder - though a simply search of ".jpg" brings up the whole stash.

Yes but I believe you need an older version. If I am remembering correctly, Malware Bytes does not work on 98 though.J T wrote:I was wondering the same thing.ExedExes wrote:Does CCleaner even run on a computer that old?
Honestly its been so long since Ive dealt with 98 my memory of what works and what doesnt is really fuzzy

THIS. Format to wipe it clean, this can be done when you do a fresh install of Windows. The drivers are very important for all the components, check the Control Panel System section to identify the various components before the new install. Win98 will get it up and running, just possibly not fully tweaked such as the soundcard, videocard hires settings or some of the other components.Hobie-wan wrote:You should definitely format it. If possible download a PDF of the manual as well. Maybe a Google Search of the model number will find the original PDF Manual and Drivers all as one Zip or Exe setup file. This can be burned to a CDR for an easy install as well as a good archive for later use.
Try to get Windows 98 SE which supports USB. I remember seeing the IBM Laptop, had kind of a nice robust look about it. Can you post specs and a screenshot of your PC Thinkpad?BoneSnapDeez wrote:Yeah I guess seeking out a copy of Win 98 is my best bet after all. Actually Bone, is the COA sticker still on the machine? If so then you just need a burned copy of the right flavor of a Windows disc and you're kosher with the license sticker on there.
98 regular supports USB. You're probably thinking of the limited '95C' release with USB support that only came with some later computers from Compaq/Dell/IBM and the like.CRTGAMER wrote: Try to get Windows 98 SE which supports USB.

I would make sure you can find drivers before you wipe the drive.
Also, try to get the CD key whether its from the COA label as stated before, or by using some third party software. That way you can just get an iso for Win 98 and you should be fine.
Even if you don't pull the drivers from the machine, there are master driver disks you can torrent, and that will make reinstalling them easier.
