I am totally down with this. For me, I expect a bajillion Pokemon games coming out, so I always skip a couple generations before grabbing the next in the series, with hopes that there will be huge changes to the systems, be they graphics or game mechanics. So far I haven't been disappointed and this will be the first purchase since Pokemon Diamond.

I'm still working on my first, Pokemon Red.

To think, I've known about Pokemon for 14 years and I'm still working on gen 1.

I'm interested... but as far as I'm concerned, those are some of the ugliest damn character designs I've seen. I love the 3D, I love the new Pokemon (the last Generation scared me a bit with some of the designs.)

I'm definitely gonna be picking this one up. Full 3D environment!!...

Unless its grid based. Is it grid based? They'd be cheating if it was grid based.

I like the fire and water starters, the grass one looks like a different colored Oshawott.

The X legendary is a creepy face away from being the Forest God from Princess Mononoke. It's actually probably based on the Chital, which has the scientific name Axis axis (as in the X and Y axis).

I haven't played through a Pokemon game since crystal? The one with the glittery cartridge.

I didn't even own it, but my friend preferred Red, so he let me borrow it.

That and Harvest Moon, haven't played any version of that since I had a lime green GBC either.

I might pick it up, if it's not as dreadfully simple as I remember them being. I remember playing my friends copy of Ruby or w/e on the GBA and not finding it particularly engrossing.

The only pokemon game i've played was the original Pokemon Red/Blue (think I played the red version, can't remember now). I thoroughly enjoyed that, but I haven't been following the games nor the series since.
I'm kind of intrigued by the art style of this one, plus getting another game for my 3DS will be nice. Do you think i'd enjoy this one? Are the newer games in the series a modern version of the originals? How many new pokemon are there? I barely remember the originals, but i'm sure if they're in this new game still, i'll remember them upon seeing them, which will be a shot of awesome nostalgia for me.
Also, I could be wrong but in the original game didn't you play as Ash? Howcome these new games have you playing as some other character i've never seen before? (Or maybe you didn't play as Ash in the first games, but at least I remember him being in the game... I think.)

Anywho, so many questions, yet pretty excited to play this game upon it's release if it's anything like the originals.

Ash is based on the protagonist of the original generation. From an IP perspective the video games come first, and then the anime comes along as an adaptation. So rather than the new protagonist for each game the anime keeps Ash and the new protagonists become supporting characters.

There are over 500 Pokémon at this point. In every game except Black & White (not sure about their sequels) you get a mixture of the new and old Pokémon as you travel through the particular game world. Black & White only gives you the new 150 they added.

The general formula of the games has not changed since the originals. You progress through the towns, collect the 8 badges, do Victory Road, and fight the Elite Four. There is content after the Elite Four are beaten. Frequently you have to do sidequests in order to progress.
