But then he'll miss out on the awesome MIDI renditions of the music.

While that's true, he wont get "WOOOO C'MON!" for the bosses or any of the other awesome digitized voice samples.

That was actually my first experience playing a Sonic game; definitely one of my favorite games of all time bar-none! Later I discovered how horrific the Carnival Night music sounded on the Genesis versus the entirely new track for the PC MIDI file though... oh dear. I like Launch Base's music better with the MIDI version as well. Ice Cap: definitely prefer the Genesis version but the MIDI version was decent as well.

Are you willing to consider newer platformers? Plenty of indie titles support custom resolutions.
I discovered Gish which has 800x600 resolution, but yeah I supposed I've moved on from this search and accepted that there aren't really any games like this. Virtualization might be something worth looking into for this game to run, eventually (maybe ).

I think Ryan was being sarcastic about the "awesome MIDI renditions of the music." The PC versions of the Sonic games had horrible music compared to the Genesis ones.

You might want to look into late Atari ST (+Atari Falcon?) and Amiga games, they had more arcade and console games than PC. No Jazz jackrabbit 2-level stuff, but some nice looking games nonetheless Just a wild guess, but if you're really hardcore, you probably might find some fine looking 2D platformers from those Japan exclusive PC platforms (FM Towns, Sharp X68000) too.
My WTB thread (Sega CD/Saturn games) Also looking to buy: Ys III (TG-16 CD), Shadowrun (Genesis) Hori N64 mini pad and Slayer (3DO) in long box/just the long box
