Re: Possible new Ecco The Dolphin game
As the article states, no members of the original Ecco dev team were responsible for it, and the reviews I saw for it were less than favorable. I have never played it, but I think the Gen titles looked and played a lot better. This is pretty big news, nevertheless.CFFJR wrote:I'm definitely excited for the possibility. If it happens I'm buying for sure.
I have to say though, that I can't comprehend why the Dreamcast sequel was a "debacle".

everything i'd heard about the DC one amounted to basically "It's okay"

Re: Possible new Ecco The Dolphin game
I spent some time with the PS2 port...it's okay. It controls well, and it has good graphics, an interesting concept, and good level design. In keeping with the tradition of other Ecco games, however, it is a bit too difficult for my taste, and the gameplay was not compelling enough for me to push through the frustration.AppleQueso wrote:everything i'd heard about the DC one amounted to basically "It's okay"
Re: Possible new Ecco The Dolphin game
The transition to 3D of many 2D games was problematic. Ecco in 3D was one of the best transitions I think. It is quite hard, which perhaps didn't earn it much favour with reviewers (the Genesis ones are also hard, but it was at a different time).
I think saying it is "just ok" is not entirely fair to the game. I played it and found it very memorable. And, just like the predecessors, it is pretty unique as a game.

Nice to see others enjoyed Defender of the Future.
I quite like the game (though I haven't finished it yet) and even though its different, as Ivo said I think it made the transition to 3d very well. The controls take some getting used to, but once you have them down Ecco moves smooth as silk.
I'll agree its not as good as the originals, but I consider it a worthy sequel. Plus, its very pretty, particularly on VGA mode.
All that aside though, the potential for a new sequel is very exciting. As I said, I'm in for sure if it happens.
I'm willing to bet though that no matter how good the game is, reviewers will probably crap on it. Especially if it keeps up the series tradition of being foot up your ass hard.

Hard AND weird. I hope this one has you teleporting to Heaven and Hell or something. Haha, the Genesis titles are super weird experiences for sure.

Update: In another Tweet, Annunziata confirmed that soundtrack composer for Ecco the Dolphin, Spencer Nilsen, “is on board.” Sounds like the project is going forward.

Re: Possible new Ecco The Dolphin game
I'm gonna be a douche, and just say if they took what they did with Dreamcast Ecco and expand on it I'm sold. Not to hate but while I love genesis Ecco I felt way more submersed in Ecco DC. I could spend an entire day just in the starting area. And with modern graphics this could really be something.
I am NOT interested in a 2D Ecco put together with vector art or prerendered backgrounds. Shallow, sure. But Ecco has always had a presence of beauty, and beauty is only skin deep. Deal with it.
Also, control issues from Ecco DC should instantly fixed by the invention of the second joystick.
