My first outing with the Engi ship I got to sector 8. What I found worked best is having a missile or bomb, since those cut through shields.

My best run so far was an Engi ship with a strong bomb launcher. I made the poor decision of trying to keep the ion cannon though, instead of replacing it with literally anything else.

Well, I switched to easy and beat the game on the first try  . I managed a pretty unstoppable dual ion cannon/5 shot laser/dual anti-ship droid setup that tore through everything. Now I'm going to try switching back over to normal to see if I have any more luck.

My best run has been an engi ship with dual ion cannons, an ion bomb, and then assault drones. Also another trick is to use a boarding party, and kill all but one of the people manning the guns. They can't repair since they're detached from the rest of the ship, but at the same time you won't trigger the super-AI like you would by murdering everyone.

I stand firmly behind my belief that the earlier you can get the boarding party the better off you will be. Couple it with sensors 2 and crank up your shields and you'll set yourself up for success.

I beat this game a little while ago and all I have to say is that multi-hitting lasers are the answer. If you can get the 5 shot in addition to a few more you can annihilate anything. I had a 5 shot and a 3 shot combined with the unblockable laser on the Federation ship and the last boss wasn't even a challenge.

My best run was with the Engi ship with the ion cannon, and 2 bots, one anti-ship, and one laser. The most crew I acquired was 6. I don't like having that many crew members though. If intruders board the ship, depending on the room they choose to attack, only so many crew can fight them off. I usually open all doors and close off the med-bay, so my guys can heal while they are fighting. By running the oxygen out of the ship, the intruders are usually weakened by the time they break through the blast door. It is a great $10 game. Very challenging. I find myself in pause mode more than I probably should be

Ive been playing this on and off for the past few months and it just sucks you in. Ive not beaten the game yet - got to the final boss a couple times, but everytime I play I come away with stories. I initially wasnt going to get the game because I didnt think I would like it, but now I cant turn it off.

My best run ended up giving me a Anti Bio beam in the first sector and by the end of the second I had max shields and a full crew in the Kestrel. I ended up dying on the final boss because I did not keep track of my o2 level.

Oh man, I hate when I die like that. You get so focused in and then realize "oh shit, the O2 system is down and the room has no oxygen and I won't be able to repair it before my crew dies.
