An alternative to replacing the drive would be simply replacing the laser mechanism.
Worked well for me.

Trust me, I checked out the internet along with doing research and did put it on it's side for a last try. I went ahead and sent it to a repair store near me who did the work (was about 100 bucks) but they repaired it and cleaned it up too so I was happy in the end. I'm not good with the lasers (I'm perfectly OK with older systems with normal cartridges) so I felt better getting it fixed by someone who knew what they were doing.
