I agree. I can't see current gen consoles becoming collectable given the lack of hardware durability.

Will original model 360s become collectable? No, because they don't function properly.

I have a 60 GB launch unit and I use mine as a spare since I upgraded to a slim. Use it sparingly and it should last a long time. There are also upgraded you can pay for that will make ylod much less likely to occurr. Such upgrades include re-soldering the gpu with a better quality leaded solder, a bigger fan, and power supply that draws less power.

I have both a slim and a 60gb CECHA01 PS3. The reason that I have two is because of the firmware. My 60gb PS3 is still on firmware 3.15 and has linux still installed on the "OtherOS". And this one is back in the box. My slim is on the other hand is on the current firmware version. Unless there is a very specific reason such as linux or Super Audio CD I would say go with a slim.

I have a suspicion that most YLOD's are due to manufacturing problems.

If you have a launch 60gb ps3, use it regularly, and it still works fine, you're probably have nothing to worry about.

I dunno. Friend of mine had his die on him only a couple months ago after years of regular use. It still could be something that'll happen sooner or later.

Not terribly so. You can also buy them for $90-120, making a warranty possibly too large a chunk of the purchase price to be worth it.
I think the main thing people run into is that Blu-ray players need to be kept up to date to keep up with new DRM schemes n' such.

That actually happened to me with my original, my jaw hit the floor when I got the flashing amber. Sony Europe replaced it for free, a year out of warranty, with the same model. Get in! This contradicts a lot of the internet-hurribile I read about them.

Thing annoys me about the launch models, especially today, is that I can't relax playing them over two-hours at a time, as any longer and I just start staring at the console every
three seconds for signs of breakdown.

I wouldn't say that's true. Some one recently posted how they changed the thermal heatsink compound in their Fat PS3.

Apparently the cheap compound that they used will dry out. If it dries out, that means it's not doing its job properly. I believe this leads to one of the causes of the YLOD. So if you care about your PS3, you might wanna replace the thermal compound some time.

You might be right about that, and replacing that thermal compound is probably not a bad idea. I've opened my ps3 before, so it's not like I've got any warranty to worry about.

I'll pick me up a tube of arctic silver next time i'm near a computer shop.

Maybe pick it up sooner, if you wanna order it from NewEgg they have a promotion right now. Apparently a tube comes with a free HDMI cable.

I just wonder though, it's known that the thermal compound they used will (or at least, can) dry out. So, did they use a better compound in the Slims? When that above thread was posted, that's the first I heard about the issue. I would have eventually replaced the compound in my PS3, but I actually just traded my Fat for a Slim. Now I'm wondering if the compound they used in the Slims will dry out as well. Because let's face it, I doubt they used a very good compound either way.
