Re: Favorite Sega memory/purchase
When I was 4 or 5, my aunt and cousins lived with my parents. Me and the cousin closest to my age (he was a year older than me) would go over to the neighbor's house and play Sega Genesis. They had multiple games, but our favorite was always Sonic 2. We loved to play two-player, and would have the neighbor's oldest son get us 50 rings so that we could "race" in the special stages. Whoever was in front at the end "won."
When I was 13, my family finally got a Genesis of our own (and I still have it today). I had tons of fun playing the Sonic games they way they were meant to be played. I'm still impressed with the number of add-ons the thing had, plus the headphone jack is cool. My siblings used to play Sonic 3 & Knuckles every morning with the sound way too loud, waking everyone up to the sound of "SEEEEGAAAAA!"
Also when I was 13, I finally got a Dreamcast. It may have been 2007 (long after the DC's prime) but that didn't stop me from being hyped up for Sonic Adventure. I read enough old articles from 1999 online that I was ready to pop by the time I finally had my DC. It may have been old, but seeing Sonic running through a 3D world (especially that killer whale scene) blew me away. Hasn't aged anywhere near as well as the Genesis games, but I still like to play it once in a while (from the level select menu, so I can skip the story).

Re: Favorite Sega memory/purchase
My favorite moment for buying a game has to be Panzer Dragoon Saga. It was 2001 and back then as we all know, the internets were non-existing when it came to reading about games. But like many Sega fans I had heard about the great RPG coming out in limited quantities and didn't get to get it years earlier.
I was going into my favorite local VG store and it was just another Sunday morning on my way to work to see what goodies they had got in the last week and I had become friends with the owner so it was my usual weekend stop. Everything was normal and i said hi and went on to check the racks for games and catching up with the owner when for a second he stopped talking and I looked over at the counter to see what he was doing and lo and behold he was smirking while holding a brand new copy of PDS in his hands and asked me if I knew what game that was.
I had seen the cover art and gameplay shots in a VG magazine which I can't remember which but instantly recognized it and said of course I did. I was so happy I couldn't believe it. Weeks earlier we had discussed it and he mentioned it was extremely rare and hard to come by.
Long story short, I he said it was $120 for it and I had $40 on me which I put down as down payment until I went to the ATM and picked it up after work. Played the beautiful game all night that night and beat it by the next weekend. Still have it and will never let it go

Thanks for sharing, DC. I second AznKhmerBoi's thoughts on your brother.
I don't know if it's my favorite memory, but it's been in my mind lately because my parents filmed the occasion with our old VHS camcorder and I recently perused our home videos: the moment my brother and I were surprised with our Sega Genesis as a family gift.
I was eight and stunned into dreamy, pajama-clad speechlessness. Then I spouted some gobbledy-gook that makes absolutely no sense. I think I was delirious.
It finishes with my dissing the NES and giving my best "Seeeeegaaaaaaahhh!" Seriously, it's hilarious -- once you get over the fact that it's your own awkward self on tape, that is.

Older. Not wiser.

Okay, based on what I just saw, "hilarious" is perhaps too a strong a word in my case. I'd say my home video is "cutely awkward," but "not quite awkward enough to necessarily be worth those five minutes of your life that you're never getting back."
I will consider editing it together, but I make no promises. Thanks for the interest though.
Anybody else have their own childhood gaming videos to share? If possible this might be fun to make into a community effort, I say.

Re: Favorite Sega memory/purchase
I love my Dreamcast but my Genesis purchase has a little more exciting story. I was about say 15 years old. Yep i was one of those kids who parents where cheap. I wanted a Genesis so i started selling games, saving whatever dollar i could here and there. A friend of mine knew someone who had a new Genesis for sale. Yep my first Pssst..come over in my trunk purchase. My friend took me to this guy in the middle of the night sort of a back alley deal type of thing.
I remember telling the guy im not going to buy it unless it works. So he took us (memory a little shotty here) to his apartment plugged it in. I gave him the money and we where outta there. I grew up in bad neighborhood and had to walk 20 min with this Genesis box(by myself) on me which was even more dangerous..
Curtsy when you walk by that Dreamcast

Mr. dreamcast4ever83,
I have to say, this was a decent thread! Easy to read, an interesting topic for many people, and a good lead in to discussion.
I just wanted to commend you.
As for the topic:
When I was in elementary school in the mid-80s, a lot of my friends and myself used to have our birthday parties at a Mexican restaurant called "Gringos" (haha, what a name). They had about a half dozen arcade machines in the restaurant. They also had a basement where you'd have your party after your food in a private area (cake, presents, etc.). They had even MORE arcade machines there, as well as a couple TVs with a VCR, NES and Master System. Basically, it was a freaking awesome place to have a party when you were in elementary school. Some of my Sega-specific memories there were:
-finishing the arcade version of Golden Axe with some friends. Many, many quarters were used.
-not getting passed level 1 on arcade Ghouls 'n Ghosts (or was it Ghosts 'n Goblins?).
-playing the Master System for the very first time. I distinctly remember Hang-On/Safari Hunt and Fantasy Zone and thinking they were awesome.
