That sums it up. I'm not big on the characters or story, but the gameplay was fantastic. I personally like the Sphere Grid quite a bit, and the atmosphere was amazing topped off with some of Uematsu's best music. I'm a rare fan of FFVIII and loved FFIX, but I honestly might be more inclined to replay FFX over them since it was really fun. Pretty curious about the remake myself.
Absolutely hated Blitzball though, no joke lol.
FFX
Re: FFX
The game was just as linear as FFXIII is derided as being. The game is one long run down a corridore with a final option to go anywhere at the end, but at that point the only places worth going are a bonus dungeon, the final dungeon, and a trying to do a sidequest where you build your own bosses by killing low level mobs. Not too different from running around Pulse and doing the various hunts.
Also, Blitzball was terrible. I'm sure it's easy to do well in but the entire mechanics of it are just bad. It's way too drawn out. Triple Triad was nice because once you knew what you were doing you could blow through games very fast and do well.

Luckily there were towns in FFX along the way, and good everything else as well.
Damn it's painful to say but I'd take Tidus over anyone in XIII. Hell, I even hate Seymour but he was 20389243 times more memorable than Bartwhatsname from XIII.
Yuna might be XIII bad at times though... YEVON YEVON YEVON!

Sums it up for me.

The game overall is very good. The graphics are well done, the music is outstanding, and the story is fine. I didn't get into the PS2 until 2004 and this game blew me away at the time. Did I mention the music is great?
However, the game is extremely easy. For me, it felt like it played itself. It was my first experience with "walking down a tunnel from cut-scene to cut-scene". There were very few random battles, so I don't even know why they bothered to include them at all. The boss battles are all scripted. There is absolutely no need to grind, as you will be overpowered the whole time anyway.
I didn't really enjoy the Blitzball.

I loved both, but Blitzball is easy once you recruit the right people and understand how to beat the AI. Plus, you get some extra special attacks for two of the main characters that you wouldn't see otherwise.

Well, it has a lot of flaws. However, the combat system is superb. My favorite of the whole series. I'm curious to see how FF XIII 2 improves on it if I ever get to play that. Unfortunately, you have to get far in FF XIII before they really let you cut loose with the combat system. The first half of the game is like a big, long tutorial and they really limit what you can do in combat
I have to say, FFXIII has a nice soundtrack and some of the most beautiful graphics I've seen this generation. Gran Pulse on a nice, HD tv is fucking gorgeous. Its main flaws are that it's too linear, has few side quests, has too many tutorials, and the story kind of gets ridiculous

Re: FFX
I don't have it, but I've played ~10 hours of it. Here's what I thought:
-Music is awesome. Maybe not all of it, but that menu theme is heartbreaking.
-Nice graphics for 2001. They still look good, even if the animation is a little wooden.
-Switching out party members during battle is a brilliant idea. Too bad the game is so easy it doesn't matter. Some of the weapons and attacks were also silly like Wakka's ball, but it works really well and it's lots of fun.
-Mostly good voice acting. Some scenes are unbearable but it's good when it counts.
-Puzzle temples were cool.
-Story makes absolutely no sense, but the character arcs are all right. The way the Guardians interact with each other is the most interesting.
-Sphere grid rocks.
-I hate blitzball.
-So far their treatment of religion is immature, but it's nice to see a game with religious overtones. Almost all games dealing with religion have a very shallow "God is stupid" attitude and I'm hoping that Yevon gets more fleshed out later in the story later on.
-Character designs are too ridiculous. I didn't like Auron, Lulu, Tidus, or...anybody, except for Yuna. Have you seen Tidus' pants?
-Ooooh pretty FMVs.
Overall it's worth playing IMO. If you're a fan of Final Fantasy it's worth having an opinion on, even if you end up not liking it. Not as good as some of the others, but it's a fun game and if you don't go in expecting FFIV you'll probably enjoy it

Re: FFX
FFX is low on my ff rankings list. I actually liked XII much more than it. I liked the world, story, and most of the characters in XII more and I was able to enjoy that battle system...
I do not think the paper, rock, scissors of X to be all that strategic or great. The moving your members in and out of party was cool though.
I hated wakka, and tidus was meh, and yuna often was annoying.
The story was illogical and goofy as well at times. In an rpg I wantgod characters and a strong story. While gameplay is apart of the package, if I wanted a purely gameplay reliant game, I think there are others that specialize in engaging gameplay I would rather play...
The game has good graphics and I did like the sphere grid.
That being said, there is still value in playing it as it is enjoyable. I will probably get the hd remake and play it. If you are an rpg fan it is definitely worth your while.

Re: FFX
I felt the origianl Sphere Grid in X was unrealized potential. You get customization near the end of the game but are forced on a linear path at the beginning. By contrast FFXII's license board gave you full control over how to build your characters from the get-go.
