Hockey!
Re: Hockey!
I have Ice Hockey for nes and I actually played for a little while last night. It's alright, but I guess I prefer the "3D" stuff.

Just pop on those 3D glasses that come with Rad Racer and you're all set.

Re: Hockey!
My top favorite hockey game out there is definitely NHL 96 on the Genesis/Snes and Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey on the N64. Never really gotten into any other games nowadays even though im sure they blow my top suggestion off the ice.

I'm a bit of a hockey nut, and love hockey games. I own:
-The Mattel Ice Hockey handheld from the late 1970s (had it since the early 80s, but no idea where it is now)
-Ice Hockey (NES)
-Blades of Steel (NES, Game Boy)
-TV Sports Hockey (TG-16)
-Mario Lemieux Hockey (Genesis)
-NHL Hockey (Genesis)
-NHLPA Hockey '93 (Genesis & SNES)
-NHL Stanley Cup (SNES)
-NHL '94 (Genesis, Sega CD & SNES)
-NHL Hockey (Game Gear)
-NHL All Star Hockey (Game Gear)
-NHL All Star Hockey (Genesis)
-NHL '95 (Genesis & SNES)
-NHL '96 (Genesis & PC)
-ESPN NHL Hockey Night (Genesis)
-NHL All Star Hockey (Saturn)
-NHL '99 (PS1)
-Wayne Gretzky 3D Hockey (N64)
-NHL 2K (DC)
-NHL 2001 (PS1, PS2)
-NHL 2002 (PS2)
-NHL 2K3 (X-Box)
-NHL 2003 (PS2)
-ESPN NHL 2K4 (X-Box)
-NHL 2004 (PS2)
-ESPN NHL 2K5 (X-Box)
-NHL 2005 (PS2)
-NHL 2K6 (X-Box)
-NHL '06 (PS2)
-NHL 2K7 (X-Box)
-NHL '07 (PS2)
-NHL '08 (PS3)
-NHL 2K9 (PS3)
-NHL '09 (PS3)
-NHL '10 (PS3)
-I didn't bother buying the most recent ones! haha
The vast majority of these were bought while they were still on store shelves. I had stuff like Ice Hockey, Blades of Steel, Mario Lemieux and NHL Hockey when they were new. I have played Wayne Gretzky Hockey (NES), Mutant League, Bret Hull '95, NHL All-Star Hockey '95 (Genesis), the Breakaway games (PS1, Saturn) etc. via rental and emulation, but haven't owned those ones.
Easily my favourites are Ice Hockey (NES), Blades of Steel (NES), the 16-bit NHL series, the mid-2000s 2K games (the historical teams, trophy rooms and mini-games were AWESOME!) and the newer EA NHL games. The PC ones were great ('99 and later), because you could totally customize them. They were also graphically amazing at the time.
As for the 16-bit EA hockey games:
-most people say NHL '94 is the best. In a way it is. It is the most refined of the original engine (NHL Hockey, '93 and '94), but to be honest '95 and '96-'98 are better in most every way. I do play '93 and '94 the most for nostalgic reasons, but the later games really do beat them in every way except for personal taste. '95 was great, but really easy to get cheap goals with. '96 is great. '97 adds a few things, but it about the same as '96. '98, to be honest, is THE most refined of the 16-bit EA games (even thought it is virtually the same as '96 and '97). Don't even bother with the SNES versions. The Genesis ones are noticeably better in every way. The frame rate in the SNES games looks like it's half that of the Genesis versions. In fact, they even CUT frames of animation from some (or all?) of the SNES EA Hockey games.

Re: Hockey!
So, safe to say the TG16 iteration of "Hit the Ice" doesn't make the cut there Breetai?
Re: Hockey!
I just don't own it (or the Genesis version). Maybe I went overboard listing everything. I wanted to point out that I like hockey! If I came across it for cheap, I would buy it.Jontendo wrote:So, safe to say the TG16 iteration of "Hit the Ice" doesn't make the cut there Breetai?

Re: Hockey!
^ Just finished off the Sabres in my first round series in NHL 94-12. On to the Bolts (and an eventual article on the webiste)
I was always an EA guy, through 2000 and then really was into the 2K series in the mid 2000s. I've played NHLPA 93, NHL 94 and NHL 95 the most, that's for sure.
