Do 2nd Hand Stores Dislike Genesis Items?

Yeah the Goodwill here usually has games for a flat rate of $5 but once in a while they'll have a few Genesis games that they price as $2.18 or something random like that. That's cart only though, if it has the case they'll put like $5.03 on it.
I haven't seen any games marked down in a while though unless they're half off that week (usually they're gone by the time they would've gone on sale. But I'm almost convinced that whoever was marking them down got fired

Sega has been out of the console business for a long time now, so I think store owners assume that Genesis games are just random old games that no one will pay real money for. Especially since Sega never got the same mainstream revival that older Nintendo systems have received.

Thrift stores seem to be the exception usually. Once in a while you'll get that cool person who just prices crap way too low.BurningDoom wrote:Really? I don't know what it is but people here tend to overshoot the price of old games. I guess they think they're worth a lot because they're old? But on another note, I honestly don't think I've ever found Genesis games at any stores around here except Goodwill and the crappy local game store that I am now boycotting.Mechblue wrote:Thrift stores seem to be the exception usually. Most thrift stores around here put all games, including Genesis sports games, at a flat rate of 5.99-7.99. It makes me sad that the pawn shop that sells FF7 black label for 80 dollars has better prices on most games than the thrift stores.
Re: Do 2nd Hand Stores Dislike Genesis Items?
I guess I should be fortunate then for the relatively reasonable prices we have here. Most stores are about 1.99 - 2.99 for NES/SNES/pretty much every game. If its genesis some stores price it a dollar cheaper than a regular game.Yancakes wrote:Most thrift stores around here put all games, including Genesis sports games, at a flat rate of 5.99-7.99. I've been to one goodwill store in another area that used different colored stickers for each day of the week and once a week they'd have a sale where everything this color sticker is some percent off for the day. I wish more would do that, might get more inventory moving and people in the store!

This is an interesting thread. In all of the thrift stores I've ever been to, they've only had Genesis games. I've never seen any Atari or Nintendo carts.
I've definitely witnessed what you're all saying about pricing, though. I found a $2 for Genesis' Aladdin in box with manual once. It was crazy.

Re: Do 2nd Hand Stores Dislike Genesis Items?
It seems nobody wants Sega games around here, either. I've built my entire Genesis collection (Four genesis consoles + ~30-40 boxed games + ~10 loose carts if I had to guess) over the last three years of stopping at one certain thrift store in town. Usually they cost $1 or $2, depending on who marks the price and how long they've been on the shelf. In that same time period, I've bought 3 N64 carts, 4 NES carts, and 0 SNES carts and two N64 consoles. It's not that they price those higher, it's that I just NEVER see any there. There is a used game store and a pawn shop that sells games right on the same block, so originally I thought that they were buying up all the Nintendo stuff and leaving the Sega games. Then I talked to some people who work there and they said that people donate Genesis games way more often than Nintendo games. It's not like I live in an area where Sega was more popular than Nintendo, so the Nintendo owners must be either holding on to their games or selling them directly to the used game stores.
My theory is that Nintendo is to used games as the Beatles are to used records. They're some of the best selling games/records of all time but the people who have them think they're "rare", so they end up keeping them or selling them online (Nintendo outweighs Sega stuff probably 5-1 on craigslist here). Either way, they never donate them.

That's as good an analogy as any I've heard.wa27 wrote:My theory is that Nintendo is to used games as the Beatles are to used records.
