I disagree with this for the most part. The story is a grand adventure all by itself. And honestly, what percent of heroes in fiction actually die anyway? 1%?dsheinem wrote: I am curious how Jackson will handle pacing/shooting/writing a script with a main character that everyone already knows will make it back home. The Hobbit itself was not written as a prequel, obviously, and something is missing when you already know so much about the significance and eventual outcome of the events unfolding...

Re: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Trailer
Good direction and writing can make it that even though you know that character X will be ok, you still can fear for their safety and wonder if they'll make it past the ordeal alive. Plus, people who have seen LotR only know about Bilbo and Gandalf. Not this cadre of dwarves. All sorts of nasty things might happen to them.dsheinem wrote:no shit. Works fine with biopics, etc.dsheinem wrote: I am curious how Jackson will handle pacing/shooting/writing a script with a main character that everyone already knows will make it back home. Re: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Trailer
Sure, sure - of course the story is a self-contained and compelling and engrossing tale in its own right, but many key moments in the book hang on Bilbo's getting into danger. Even if heroes rarely die in a film, audiences generally like to play along and pretend otherwise when watching. That can't happen here. Same with the character development of Gandalf, Gollum, and other figures that appeared in LOTR - this film won't really get to do that in quite the same way that the book can...ZenLogikos wrote:I disagree with this for the most part. I have complete faith in Jackson to make the film great, and I have no doubts that he'll do right by Tolkien. I just think that the book will have to have its focus shifted here and there (to the Dwarves, to the townsfolk of Dale or Erebor, the epic final battle, etc.) to work as a film prequel, since it itself was a precursor to LOTR.
Re: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Trailer
Sure, we can enjoy learning a backstory, but even biopics don't often feature the protagonist in a lot of "I wonder if he'll survive!" moments. The Hobbit has these aplenty.AppleQueso wrote:Works fine with biopics, etc.dsheinem wrote: I am curious how Jackson will handle pacing/shooting/writing a script with a main character that everyone already knows will make it back home. Although I don't agree personally with the research (i.e. it's not true for me, even if it's true for a majority of people), this is still pertinent.dsheinem wrote:Sure, sure - of course the story is a self-contained and compelling and engrossing tale in its own right, but many key moments in the book hang on Bilbo's getting into danger. Hey, if knowing the ending completely ruined a film like that, there'd be no point in rewatching them.dsheinem wrote: Sure, we can enjoy learning a backstory, but even biopics don't often feature the protagonist in a lot of "I wonder if he'll survive!" moments. The Hobbit has these aplenty.
