I would say that's a larger trend than just core gamers vs Wii. You get the same thing with Gears/CoD/Halo/etc hate, just with a largely different group of people. It's also not something restricted to gaming. People like to feel special, and being part of a relatively exclusive group serves to do that, even if it's more or less one they created for themselves.
Yeah, I made the same point myself in the OP. I find it fascinating as to how it pertains to the Wii. I had a conversation recently with someone who made a point of referencing all the console they owned and the fact the Wii wasn't amongst them, as though that was some sort of qualification towards its worthlessness. When I pressed further as to why it wasn't worth owning, I got a blunt 'because it's crap', when I asked why, I got the standard laundry list of catchphrases i.e. no games, motion controls et al and when I countered them with the usual lists and reasons why the Wii isn't entirely write-offable, it occurred to me that I could list reason after reason for hour after hour and it probably wouldn't be enough, like this person needed to feel as though the Wii was entirely useless, as believing such confirms and reinforces their identities.
I think there's point where it even criss-crosses with class, or it used to anyways. I look forward to the when someone sit down and writes that inevitable essay on brand-bias' role in gaming.
I think it relates to a generality, such as the anti COD/'big business gaming, that there
exist this phenomena of anti-populism, or to be contrary for contrary's sake.
