I think this article does a good job explaining the situation. Big hurricanes do hit the Northeast, just not very often.

Forget bottled water, bread, and milk. I'm buying a sixer of heavy seas beer and an inner-tube. And if the power goes out, you better believe I have plenty of potatoes, and copper wire; batteries are for sissies.

Potatoes & copper wire? Sounds like 2nd grade science class. I don't remember, how long would that last??

Early 90's. I remember Bob as well. I was pretty young, but I do remember it.
Yeah, Gloria sucked. I was 8 years old when that happened. We lost power for almost 2weeks I believe. Looks like Irene is going to be a direct hit for NY/Metro area. Sucks. I'm off to the bank after work and hoping to get batteries somewhere along the way but I have serious douts there will be anything left. I'm hoping for a last minute turn or down grade for the storm but as of right now it's not looking good. I also hope the Carolinas will be ok and of course to any RB memebers in that area and anywhere in the path of this shit as well. Good Luck to all and be safe!
I am addicted to video games, especially retro gaming from my era. I have: NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, Gamecube, Gameboy, GBA, Wii, Sega Genesis, Sega CD, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, Xbox, and Xbox 360. I have probably over 1,000 games in total for all these systems combined. Yes, I need help and I wouldn't have it any other way! This is my passion and hey my wife still loves me!!

If you just heard a "zoom" sound, it's my joke going over your head.

No I assure you it hit me dead-on; provided me with an interesting image as well.I just recalled that potatoes do make some current and can light up a bulb but how long and how bright was what piqued my curiosity despite the joke.

I guess you'd need a lotta potatoes & LEDs. So much for ES science.

No kidding.

I actually have to hand crank radio/flashlights. The technological aspect of the devices are really interesting. Interesting enough that I'll check it out on Wikipedia, but not interesting enough for me to really look into it. I would imagine the technology is similar to gaining power from dams. Every action has a reaction right?

The potato battery works exactly like any other battery. You have two different metals that oxidize or reduce at different rates in a solution (potato juice) leading to a surplus of electrons on one terminal.

Hand crank radios work like an electric motor does in reverse. Physically passing a coil of wire through a magnetic field puts a force on the electrons in the wire, causing them to move (current).

So I read in the paper today that Fire Island was issued a suggested evacuation, though they might make the evac mandatory depending on how the storm tracks. I read that any one South of Sunrise should be prepared, but I'm well North of Sunrise. Not that I'm not prepared though. I'm fully expecting my neighbors rickety fence to come down (it's ready to fall down on its own). Actually, perhaps I better tie it down a little so pickets don't come crashing through my windows. I'm more worried about the amount of junk he has all over his yard. I don't want any of it to end up blowing through my windows!

I had to tie down this rickety metal shed that's in my yard. Two years ago, not even during a hurricane, it got shifted by wind. I would expect tropical storm or hurricane winds to toss it around pretty good. I have it anchored pretty well, I'm confident it wont move. I'm probably most worried about my roof though, it's not in the greatest shape.

That evacuation is mandatory now for Fire Island man. They're also evacuating patients from South Side Hospital to North Shore LIJ. Crazy stuff. I'm north of sunrise too and the LIE as well. I'm in an apartment complex so I'm hoping not to have too much worry about but we'll see. Hope everything holds up on your end! Be safe dude! Think I'm going to charge my GBA!
