I'm going to New York and I want to see trains!

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Haha, yeah, it's a shame.

There is a railroad museum out in Riverhead, Long Island (about an hour and a half from NYC) and I've also been to the Brooklyn Transit museum which has a ton of info on old subway cars and building the LIRR / subway and such.

If you're into model trains there's a place called "wrong island railroad" out in Ronkonkoma Long Island (about 45 min from NYC).

and yeah...the subway can be scary but you can use it to get to Penn and take the LIRR out to Long Island.

General Subway stuff if you're scared.
Uptown Trains: Go north and towards the Bronx
Downtown Trains: Go South and terminate in either Queens or Brooklyn
(NYC is in between them all)

If you get on the wrong one, get off at the next stop and take the train going the other direction.. for free! Plus, most people are nice enough to help you out nowadays.

I'm sorry, but why is thee NY metro scary? I've been to Athen's, London's and Berlin's metro and they all seemed very safe places :S. (well, Athens metro IS a safe place. the other I only sued them for a week each so I'm not 100% sure)

Some people get overwhelmed if they're not used to riding subways or other public transit.

Trying to figure out the systems and knowing which way to go. Plus, if you're from a rural area, NYC is a mindfuck. To me, it's not a big deal because i've always lived here, but I know people who have visited NYC maybe once or twice in their lives and it's like Disney world to them. Living in a town of 1000 people and then being in a place with 1 million is crazy and overstimulating.

I don't think people say they are scared of the subways/metros due to safety concerns. I'm most scared of the E train in Queens. Every station is a bum urinal.

This is true, I recently got mindfucked by trying to use the metro in Paris when I was there. I'm just a small Perth boy who's used to a train system that only has five lines :?
