Try cdrdao from fink. It's what I use on linux. OS X is UNIX so it should be the same there. Something like 'cdrdao write --speed 4 image.cue' should do the trick.

I have mostly macs in the house but I have never gotten PS1/Saturn/Dreamcast burns to work with them. I have a Gateway PC notebook that is on its last legs that has been configured to a sweet spot and it will burn just about anything... so I keep using that.

I will keep an eye on this thread, though. That Gateway isn't going to last forever.

Alright, I know you said you're using a Mac, but it's really all the same stuff. You're gonna be doing the SAME things no matter what program you use. That being the case, read through this guide for PC to familiarize yourself with the burning process. You wont be using ImgBurn, but again, you'll still be doing the same thing. Just with different software. :D

http://www.racketboy.com/retro/hacks/20 ... tware.html

I especially want you to read about checking Saturn images BEFORE burning them. I'm pretty sure there's an emulator for Saturn on Mac. Saturn Region Patcher is written for PC, but is there no way for you to use it on Mac? Isn't there Rosetta Stone or something?

Anyway, here's a good question. The burned discs that you tried to play on your Saturn, did it just give you audio tracks or did it give a message "Game disc not suitable for this console" or something to that effect. Audio tracks means a bad image or a bad burn. The message, that means the burn is good but the game is set to a different region than your console. You would have to use Saturn Region Patcher to change the region of the game image, or try downloading it from another source.

In my experience, I found it VERY common to download a Saturn game that some one set to a different region. Also, straight up bad images do exist out there. That's the point of testing the game image in a emulator before burning. But it's all in the guide I linked above.

I did some Saturn burning in the past on my mac. The simplest way to go is to get a file which contains .cue and .bin files. Then you download a freeware called Burn. Use Burn to open and burn the .cue file, which will appear as a 4k or so file, which is in fact a kind of command list that the program will follow to burn your game. Easy as that. Just make sure that your system has the right chip and that the game you choose will work if your system is or not region locked. (Please note that I do not encourage that kind of stuff. I do not encourage overpricing ebay sellers either  )

Ahhhh, and don't forget to change the music track format to wave (.wav), or it won't do. I've often seen .ape files (don't know from where this strange format comes from). Use a little freeware called Max to convert it and replace all the .ape by .wav in the same folder. Can't remember if I forget something else.

Yeah Max will cover your audio conversions, why people upload them in a non-wave format at all completely boggles my mind.

As far as burning, you should also check out LiquidCD. I can't recall if I've tried Burn before, but I know that LiquidCD works, at least to a certain degree. I managed to burn two games, one of which worked. The big issue you'll run into is getting audio to work, because cue/bin/mp3 are a bit strange, and for some reason aren't very well handled on the Mac.

Good luck!

I actually burned a Saturn game on my Mac last night. It's a G4 running 10.4. I installed fink and invoked cdrdao like this:

Code: Select all

cdrdao write --device IODVDServices --driver generic-mmc cuefile.cue

Worked perfectly. If you have a computer with a faster drive, you might want to add '--speed 4' to that.

Hello I am new to the forum, but I really went thru a lot of sh... i mean "reserch" to burn saturn .cue/iso files on mac correctly.
Of course you can simply use Toast to open the image file but IT WOUNT BURN THE AUDIO FILES, in other words you will get the game to run with no music, because theres no way to burn MIXED/CUSTOM CDS or ENHANCED CDROMS on toast 10.

What you need to do is get LIQUIDCD here http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/19994/liquidcd (its freeware) , run the application and select 'OTHERS' from the tool menu, drag and drop the .cue file .... and burn in 8x speed (or slowest possible) -> as simple as that, you dont need to move the .mp3 tracks to wav or anything else.
 NOTE: I could not find any other burning application to read .cue files on Mac. I tried-> Burn, Firestarter, Simpleburn, Burnbabyburn, NTI Dragon burn, Image Burn, BurnXfree, Shadowburner and Toast....

 If you have a region issue, you can change the region with "SATHEATHER" http://www.rysley.com/pages_html/satheader.htm or "SSaturnRegion10b" (google it) wich are simple PC applications, you need to run them either with "CrossOver Games" utility or "Wine" utility in order to change the region of the image file, works perfectly!!!!.

 If the .cue file is wrong, corrupt or missing, you can run "SATHEATHER" with "CrossOver Games" utility, in the "extra" menu option of SATHEATHER you can find a "cue file maker" that runs perfectly!!!. Note: the audio files have to be .mp3 format.

 If you have a .mdf file (disc images made with pc program Alcohol 120%, I believe) there are several ways to handle it:
You can open it with LIQUIDCD.
You can remane it to .iso and open it with TOAST10
You can use MISO-J utility http://mac.softpedia.com/get/Utilities/MISO-J.shtml to convert the .mdf file to .iso file  (sick!!! it also works for psx images)

Hope to be usefull, as I said before I went thru a lot of problems and burned over 50 useless cds to come to this conclusion, LIQUIDCD is the Alcohol 120% mac equivalent when it comes to burn saturn, dreamcast, psx and ps2 games!

THANKS

I am able to get US games working fine, but the others are tricky. Is there a way to get SATHEATHER in English? I used CrossOver Games and got that program to run but i had no idea what was going on. Any other help? But seriously, thank you so much! Great info.

It's pretty easy to change the region of saturn games with a hex editor. I originally posted instruction in this thread. To save you a click:

I looked at the code for region patching. It looks pretty simple. If you just want to do one or two, you can use a hex editor. If it's a bin/cue go to 0x50 and place a U. If it's an ISO, go to 0x40 and place a U. I haven't tried it on my saturn, but I checked out a couple ISOs and that appears to be how it goes. Hope that helps.
