I'd like to see you emulate the Saturn on an Apple IIe emulator running on a hacked PSP:

MAKE IT SO!

Get the VGA box. It has the bypass Composite/S-Video output for the Dreamcast games that do not support VGA. Most DC games do work with VGA but you mind find one you like that doesn't.
I'm a tad confused on this myself, since my HDTV doesn't have S-Video would it be pointless to get the box, or is that where the bypass comes in?

Your TV has composite RCA inputs though, right?

I feel like you want to have the box just in case you ever to encounter a game you want to play that isn't VGA compatible. I suppose you could always just keep your composite cables and switch them out too.

I actually have two DCs, one on the HDTV connected VGA for regular DC gaming, one on the CRT connected with official DC s-video cables for light gun games.

Then that's why you want the box! S-video is just one option it provides, alongside composite, in case you have games that don't work with VGA.

Oh, well that definitely makes sense then. Yeah I'll probably consider getting that one, and S-video could be useful maybe sometime down the road with another TV or something.

The box has a bypass S-Video and Composite connection so you can use RCA Composite and Audio cables. There is a tiny slide switch on the VGA Box that shorts a couple pins internally that puts the Dreamcast in VGA mode.

You can really throw confusion into the octopus wiring by adding a SVideo to VGA adaptor. This won't improve the non VGA games to 640x480 resolution, but it will be cleaner then using Composite. A separate VGA selector box would also be needed if your HD only has one VGA input.

Here are the crazy connections:

1a. VIDEO - Dreamcast to VGA Box to VGA Cable to HD
1b. AUDIO - Stereo ⅛ mini cable from VGA box to HD

2a. VIDEO - Svideo cable from VGA Box to VGA upscaler/convertor to HD.
2b. AUDIO - RCA audio cable to Stereo ⅛ mini plug.

A lot of trouble for just a few Dreamcast games that won't work with VGA direct. The pic will look a little better with the Chroma Luma signals separated. Maybe not drastic but might make a difference on a large screen.

Crazy. I feel like it was just posted somewhere, but do we have a list of non-VGA compatible games?

I've read one before but I can't remember where. My understanding is the non VGA games aren't worth playing. I also understand that most games can support VGA, regardless of whether they have it marked on their case.
