7800 and Genesis use the chips from the 2600 and SMS as processors for other stuff when in native mode and they behave exactly as they did in the original machines when playing the older games. So no in these cases.

The PS3 definitely has these options and I actually just recently saw you can enable the smoothing option to always be on in one of the settings menu's. Playing PSX games through my PS3 (HDMI) look dead sexy on my HDTV.AppleQueso wrote:iirc, doesn't the Wii via component cables allow you to have 480p in games that didn't even support 480p originally?
Anhow, the ps2 has a somewhat out of the way option to enable texture filtering in ps1 games. Generally it looks pretty nice, but you have to turn it on EVERY TIME you turn on the console. It can also enable fast loading, which causes some games to glitch up.
Not too sure if the ps3 has those options. I think it does, but I'll have to go check again. I know it CAN upscale ps2 games though.
Don't think it has fast loading, but as you said that funked with some games on the PS2 anyways so oh well, I never used it. That is until a certain part in Xenogears, that game is infamous for messing up at a very specific boss battle on PS2's for some reason, lol. Was a royal pain in the ass getting past that (this was before I had a PS3 so that's how I played it).

Close! The Z80 was usually used for a sound engine which drove the real soundchips. The Yamaha 2612 and the Texas Instruments SN76489. This offloaded a ton of calcuations so that the Motorola 68k could do "Blast Processing"AppleQueso wrote:The Genesis uses the SMS processor as its sound chip

However, what it is doing is vastly superior to upscaling.jeffro11 wrote:The Wii isn't up-scaling the N64 games, it is rendering them at a new resolution. No up-scaling at all.

I might have a good reason to start seriously looking into VC after all...

The Super Gameboy does not upscale the picture. It displays the pixels 1:1 in the center of the screen at 240P resolution. That's the reason for the built-in SGB borders. On a scart connection it accurately displays the picture to the best of a CRT's ability using the original gameboy hardware in the cart, but model 1 of the SGB is slightly different pitch and speed (4% higher? - upscaled sound/speed?).
On the other hand, the Gameboy Player upscales everything plugged into it. Not much is gained from using the 480P mode with component cables as the low resolution has already been scaled to size and in the process blurred to look better at the higher resolution through standard cables. I much prefer the SGB if it's not a GBC or GBA game to avoid the forced hardware interpolation/resampling.

Not only this, but it does away with the horrible low quality antialiasing/blurring the n64 did to its video output.AppleQueso wrote:wait the wii seriously does this with n64 games? Anybody have some good comparison pics?

What's the verdict on these? Do they actually upscale?
I think 7800 sound chip got downgraded compared to the 5200 to accommodate 2600 carts.
PS2 - Yes
Not much difference though.
PS3 - Yes
Wii - No
Not sure about the rest. There is also Bleem that upscales PS1 games on the Dreamcast console.

You have to push the red button before the game starts if it has the option. So no it doesn't support 480p on games that didn't have it to begin with. Games just look sharper because of the quality of the signal.AppleQueso wrote:iirc, doesn't the Wii via component cables allow you to have 480p in games that didn't even support 480p originally?YoshiEgg25 wrote:GameCube games are not upscaled on the Wii.
