I've gone back and forth with it but decided I prefer a more 'official' look, even if it's not as aesthetically pleasing. I could probably flip again on this in the future though...

I make covers btw. Probably won't take any requests because it's time consuming and general lack of interest. I used to do a fair bit of stuff for The Cover Project but I've been pretty inactive the past several months.

i would personally rather have original casing than a homemade do-it-yourself job. so yes, i would rather have loose cds than store them in a homemade case. it just seems tacky. it's like putting plastic rims on your dream car.

stuff like ps1 and dc should be easy to replace in the event the case becomes cracked. also, i think sega cd/saturn/ps1 long boxes get a bad rap. they are not as brittle as everybody makes them out to be. i find more long boxes in the wild that are in good shape than shitty beat to hell ones.

how can anybody not like the look of a long box, whether it be sega cd, saturn, or ps1?

this was already asked, but why move the dc and ps2 to dvd cases?
if you took a shit, please put it back

Uniformity.

Here's what a shelf full of recased games looks like.

(and before anyone asks, the empty space is where I'm going to put a recliner).

I thought about putting my (mostly) cart only SNES collection in those universal game cases, but they take up way more space than carts alone. I have 100+ carts, so that's a lot of space. Besides having to print 100+ covers, ink is too expensive.

That wall is bad ass though, Popo.

I think I've been saying bad ass too often.

Niiiice. Looking good Mr P.

Did you have any cardboard boxes, say for your N64 games? What did you do with them?

I don't think it's so much an aesthetic thing for those as it is simply the fact that longbox jewel cases are a lot more difficult to replace if anything happens to them. Unlike CD jewel cases and DVD cases, there's NO way to buy new replacements outside of gutting sports games and the like.

Nope, only cardboard boxes I have are for Metal Warriors, Kolibri, and the first printing of Pier Solar. The first two are in a box with all my empty jewel cases, and Pier Solar is on the shelf because it fits decently well with the UGCs. Though I keep going back and forth on that one; I could fit both the CD and the cart in a UGC and it'd be more uniform.

The DVD cases are nice but do take a little more room. Plus the headache of printing all the Dreamcast and PS1 DVD case covers. The inside book holder just does not look full with a Jewel case sized instruction manual.

I keep the Dreamcast Jewel Cases on their own dedicated CD style shelf. The PS1 games are in two huge binders. No screaming, thats over 300 PS1 games that I can easily get to right under the table. No worries, I saved all the PS1 cases including the long boxes in another room. PS2 games are the only discs stored in another room, HDAdvance helps make that easy.

I did make up some covers for a two Wii games with spare white Wii DVD cases. Wii Sports and Links Crossbow which originally came in as a game pack in cardboard sleeve. Just so all the Wii games would be in the same sized case. I did the same for Gamecube GB Player disc.

I am happy that PS2 and Gamecube went to a standard DVD case size. A shame the PS3 compact DVD style case size did not come out as a standard in the begining.

My solution for that was to store all my non-DVD manuals (and manuals for PC games that are multi disc) separately. I got several binders and those pages that comic collectors use and drop the manuals in there. It also lets me easily store the crazier stuff like the pack-ins for Lunar.
