RPG's for beginners?
Re: RPG's for beginners?
Indeed, if you liked SoM, check out SD3 and SoE for sure. Maybe consider Terranigma and Illusion of Gaia for others that are kind of similar with real time combat, etc.

Skies of Arcadia really got me into RPGs, so it might work for you too.

I like this game too, but I get stuck in it sometimes and it pisses me off.
Play a few of the oldschool Rpgs too. those can give you some heads up for the newer stuff. Go for something more simple and then you can tackle the more harder stuff.
If you want to learn to play tactics rpgs, then I recommend Vandal Hearts for playstation. Vandal Hearts is basic stuff not too terribly hard and if you beat this game you can have a better idea whenever you play tatics rpgs.
I would recommend Shining force games, some of those are good for beginners.
I've played many RPGs in the past but the one of the first ones I played and beat was Vandal hearts and Shining force 3. These may be hard to get tho, so play them emulated just in case so if you do enjoy them you can then buy them.

Re: RPG's for beginners?
Just curious to know what do you mean by "for beginners"?
Are you looking for one that don't have frequent random encounters (vs enemies on-screen you choose to engage)? Or easy to learn in-game system (i.e. simple gameplay vs complex leveling and commands)?
the Pokemon, Final Fantasy, and Dragon Quest series are well established, so any newbies should be able to jump right in.

skyknight,
I'm looking for games that are easy to pick up and learn, that could help prepare me for games with more complex gameplay.
I didn't mention it before, but if it helps with the suggestions, the three platforms I own are a DS Lite, PSP, and Xbox 360.

Final Fantasy Tactics is not a traditional RPG, especially for beginners. It's a strategy RPG, which is an entirely different sub-genre.
On the DS, the basics are:
Dragon Quest IV, V, VI, IX
Final Fantasy III, IV
Chrono Trigger
The DQ games are probably the easiest to get into, followed by Chrono Trigger and then the FF games.
On the PSP, I am less familiar with the RPG offerings. There are a few Final Fantasy games. Lunar has a version on it. The original Sega CD and PS1 remake were awesome, so hopefully the PSP version followed suit. There are some good action RPGs on the DS and PSP like some Ys games, but those are not really traditional RPGs. They are more like Zelda.
I would probably go for the other DQ games on DS, then Chrono Trigger, then the FF games.
On the 360, there are mainly western-style RPGs. The better ones are Oblivion (The Elder Scrolls IV), Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, Mass Effect 1/2, Fable 1 (original X-Box) 2 and 3, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 1/2 (original X-Box, but they should be playable on the 360 I assume).

Re: RPG's for beginners?
Personally I'd recommend FFIV on the PSP over the DS for a relative newcomer to RPGs. The difficulty on the DS version is really kicked up several notches. There's a few good RPGs on the 360 that are JRPGs (one's a KRPG). Blue Dragon's a good intro RPG, and Magna Carta 2 is a good action RPG. Lost Odyssey is another good JRPG, except it has the most horribly balanced first boss ever. Once you get past him it should be smooth sailing, but it takes everyone multiple tries.

Re: RPG's for beginners?
I remember reading that Final Fantasy 4 was revamped to be an easier game when originally brought over on the snes. I think I read this when Chronicles came out, because supposedly the version included in there was the difficulty of the original jp release.MrPopo wrote:Personally I'd recommend FFIV on the PSP over the DS for a relative newcomer to RPGs. However, I have only played those and the GBA port (which was awesome, and finally allowed you to make a dream team of characters)
I wonder if the ds/psp ports are of different versions? Or its possible that I read all of that in a completely unreliable place, as it was probably 10 years ago.
Either way, its a great final fantasy to start on. If you have a girlfriend/friend to play with, and want to try an action rpg, Tales of Vesperia might be fun (however, don't start here IMO, its a fast-paced game)
Eternal Sonata is also 2p, but turn-based. I haven't had the chance to play it, but it looks pretty fun. Blue Dragon was fun as well, although a bit open.
If you do get into rpgs a bit from these, I would suggest getting a ps2. Seeing as it can play ps1 and ps2 games, thats more rpgs than you could ever play (I am currently trying

Re: RPG's for beginners?
Did it actually help you play a real rpg though? I found it to be so beginner friendly that it didn't really prepare me for a real rpg. I mean, you don't even have to equip, it does it for you. You never explore, because you are on a rail. Its pretty damn hard to die in that game too.alexis524 wrote:i second Final Fantasy Mystiq Quest on SNES. very beginner friendly.
I dunno, to me, mystic quest would prepare you about as well as watching someone else play a real rpg. It could jsut be me, and I am not trying to bash others suggestions. I just don't think this game would help all that much. The Legend of Zelda (for the NES) is more of an rpg than mystic quest. At least there is some exploring
