The Guilty Gear series is made by the same team as BlazBlue, they just lost the rights to it when they moved to a new publisher. From what you and others have said in this post, I think you are SOL. I've heard Arcana Heart 3 is really good and is a full disc based release in Japan. Sony just has a rule that in order to release a disc based game for PS3 it must have English everything. This title kept the Japanese voices with English subtitles. I'm probably going to pick it up once PSN comes back online.

I also agree that in virtually every fighting game story is secondary. Having said that, I've heard the King of Fighters series actually has a decent storyline if you go back to the old saga's like 95-97 and 99-01. '98 and '02 are compilations of all of the characters but don't really feed into the KOF canon.

There are also many fighting games that are based on visual novel's that have excellent stories, such as Melty Blood which is based on a VN called Tsukihime. But these are mostly PC fare on this side of the Pacific.

I'm not looking for high end graphics at all. It's just the cool anime art style that I'm looking for.

Also, King of Fighters XII looks interesting. And can anyone comment on whether or not people still play KoFXIII, Blazblue: CS, or Arcana Heart 3? I assume someone would still be playing them but I wan't to play it safe just in case.

Shit, is that true? Nobody tell him I said this, but Inazuma is right for once...

Arcana Heart 3 just released here on psn so there should be plenty of people to play with. KoF and BB are both circulated on the proscene quite a bit, but between those two you will find more people playing Blazblue on the home console online scene right now. KoF XII had some serious issues and we have yet to get any version of XIII in the states. Stick with Continuum Shift, its near flawless in my eyes.

Does that mean that in most match-ups I would only get placed against godplayers who eat breath and sleep fighting games?

Just play Marvel Super Heroes or any of the versus games(X-Men vs Streetfighter, Marvel vs Capcom, Marvel vs Capcom 2, etc.). They are accesible, look great and I think they still have an active fanbase. You can also play the newers ones like MvC 3 or that versus game on the Wii. Tatsunoku versus something or other I think it's called

You might also like the Darkstalkers series.

If it's story you're looking for, then it's Mortal Kombat. I remember MK Deadly Alliance having TONS of story info you could unlock. I have always argued that the MK series tells better stories than other fighters

Well here's the thing about a lot of fighting games out there, once a game has been out for a while and the herd moves to the new releases, the game may die or like you say the pros take over. My best advice to you is to completely ignore your win/lose ratio and just learn something from each match in any game you try. Playing fighting games online is BRUTAL at times but rewarding if you put the time in. A lot of people are focusing on Super Street Fighter 4, Marvel vs Capcom 2 and 3, and the new Mortal Kombat online at the current state of the genre. Blazblue is sitting on the tier below those from what I have seen in popularity with games like King of Fighters or Melty Blood. You will find plenty of opponents. Be patient and when you do get bodied, sit back for a second and think about how they beat you. Strong defense will save your ass online in pretty much any fighting game.

I think people are forgetting that he asked for a game with an active online community.

I'm telling you, try Marvel vs. Capcom 2 on XBLA. It's very active online, and it has a very similar playstyle to BlazBlue. Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix is another good one, but I can't guarantee you'll like how it plays.

Don't bother with KoF. All of the games on 360 and PS3 have god awful netcode to the point of being unplayable. If you have to try KoF, try it on GGPO when the servers are live again. Good netcode, and KoF '02 is the best one in the series anyways.
