Re: keeping up is a chore
Um, this IS my gaming news site. Aside from the occasional trip to gamerankings(even that I rarely do lately)or metacritic(which lets me know about ALL new releases in the entertainment world)I don't even follow game news anymore

Does anyone use a Reddit or one of those multi-page sites?
(FC, AVFC, NES, SFC x2, SNES, N64, GC x2, Wii x2)*(G&W x7, GB, GBpocket, GBASP, DS-L x2)
(GEN, SS x3, DC x3)*(PCE-Duo)*(Xbox:500GB)*(NGCDZ, NGPC)*(PS1, PStwo, PS3:160GB, PSP.3K)

Nope. It's gotten easier. Because 99% of the games coming out are grungy 1st person shooters that I could care less about. The other 1% of the time I get to be pleasantly surprised when I suddenly start hearing about a cool new game and then BAM! it's out.
Wake me up when Jak 4 is about to be released.

I'd have to agree, it was almost overwhelming last year and the year before when I did Gamefly as well. Now that I'm struggling to get by and don't have a lot of money, need a job, etc, I dropped Gamefly and have been without it for several months... and I'm gonna have to say it's actually been a lot of fun. I'm getting to my backlog, playing some classic stuff I missed out on, etc.
I've cut down on my sites as well and it's been nice. There's just a lot of stuff going on in the industry that frustrates me thesedays, a lot of annoying articles that some blog/sites put up, so it's been nice to cut back down and just take a breather for awhile. And this whole time, I don't feel like I've missed much either. I borrowed AC Brotherhood from a friend, Enslaved, and some other games off and on of what I -really- want to play and that's been fine.
Feels good to relax.

I do keep with the news even though I'm practically not participating in the next (current) generation but I have to agree. There's to much news everywhere, and it's not just the games. Every little detail that has been revealed about anything has to appear on those sites. Before the game is even released you already know everything about it, and that's not a good thing. Sometimes I miss the times when I didn't have the Internet and my knowledge of what's going on in games industry was from monthly gaming magazine(s).

Maybe I am in the minority, but I have found that most of these sites scoop the same stories from the same companies or each other. Why read more than one if you are just after news? Do you really miss out on much?
Re: keeping up is a chore
I agree most stories are just copy paste from other sites. And most of them are for crappy games no one cares.dsheinem wrote:Maybe I am in the minority, but I have found that most of these sites scoop the same stories from the same companies or each other. Thanks everyone...

In my experience that's how EVERYTHING on the internet works. Rarely do you see the original source credited after something has been copy and pasted a billion times all over the netGnashvar wrote:I agree most stories are just copy paste from other sites. Re: keeping up is a chore
I stopped keeping up with gaming news after I graduated from college and settled into getting a hold of older games I hadn't played. The only time I know what's going on is when it's discussed on forums like this one. I don't follow anything these days.
Re: keeping up is a chore
This is why I'm a retro gamer. I really don't care what is coming out or when, since I'm not going to play it for 5 years anyway. By then everyone knows what was good and what wasn't, so I don't need to keep up on reviews to know what is worth playing. Stuff is cheaper too. At this point the only upcoming game I'm even aware of is DNF.
I do the same thing with music and TV. I don't think I own an album released in the past 5 years. But if you bring your act to Omaha, I will definitely check you out and quite possibly buy a ticket. That way I don't have to keep track of everything going on across the country, just local bands and events. For TV, I usually won't watch dramas until they've concluded. Then there's no chance of getting involved in a series and having it canceled.
