I don't think this is true. The GBPlayer disc tells it to boot extra hardware, it's not like how the FreeLoader is able to just look in the Cube's existing Mem Card slot.nightrnr wrote:I've heard Freeloader discs work with the Gameboy Players. At least, that what the local import shop told me, but I've seen it posted on other forums too.
I've never tried it myself; still have my regular discs and I don't import for the system (that's what freeloader is for I think). But if you happen to have a freeloader disc lying around, it's worth a shot.

Re: Gameboy player disc
Maybe what he meant, or what the guy at the import shop meant was that you could use a FreeLoader to boot a US GBPlayer boot disc, which in turn will boot the GBPlayer.

Re: Gameboy player disc
This could very well be a gaming "urban myth", but I'd love to see it proven/disproven.
I just called the shop in question, and the owner still claims that the Freeloader disc will work in lieu of a GBP disc. The Player itself is region free (just like a regular GBA), and I swear I've heard of some selling with a freeloader disc (instead) online. But I'll admit, this is all hearsay and rumor (and there's also the possibility that I don't know what I'm talking about
).
But the store currently doesn't have a GBP to test it on either. I currently live like 3 hours from that shop too, so I can't even do any P.I. work. The store owner is probably wrong.
But I think Freeloader discs go for more than GameBoyPlayers anyways ($20-30). Even if Freeloader worked, you'd be better off just getting a replacement disc from Nintendo or on ebay.
Still, if anyone can settle this enigma for sure, let us know.

Agree with Noise. The GB Player disc is needed. Code Junkies Free Loader is simply a boot disc to load another region's discs, not the hardware.
Just to confirm, I just tried the non-code entry GC Action Replay which includes Freeloader. GBA game cart Snood plugged in. Clicked on Freeloader and it prompts to switch to a game disc. Reset, then tried the GB Player disc which supplies the opening screen menu and the GBA cart works as it should. Newer GC Action Replay also includes an undocumented SD Media Launcher.
When I was at Gamestop I was so picky to be sure to get the case and cardboard liner, now one is lucky to get just the disc with the GB Player hardware, Glad I already have a spare of the complete GB Player package. I should pick up a spare game Cube though.
Just a region boot disc, nothing more.

Thanks for setting it straight CRTGamer
(and Noiseredux, the Gameboy Guru, for calling it)
I'll be more careful of what I hear.
That's too bad though. I think there's a lot of Gameboy Players out in the wild without the disc.
To the Topic creator:
Keep an eye on ebay. There's bound to be a few auctions for the disc that nobody bids on for cheap. Most people probably look for a complete set, as buying separately is an obvious hassle.

Well then its good that for right now Nintendo is selling those discs at least in North America, but I'm betting they're in Europe too.
