By the time the 'Lite' and 2K versions come out in a year or so, they'll be better designed, have the bugs worked out, they'll cost less & have a affordable game library worth buying. Then I'll compare and make my choice.
I wasn't aware of any reliability issues with either the PSP1000 or the DS phat...
I never said they did have reliability issues. It just seems these new portables seem much more complex than their predecessors. And in my experience, complex things break faster than simple things.

Edit: The DS phat was nearly unbreakable, but I do remember lots of people having lots of stuck pixels with the 1K PSP. I think this was fixed for the most part with the 2K model. Also I thought I read that the UMD drives fail fairly easy on the PSP 1K model. I'm not sure if this has been fixed with later models though.

Well I'll be the first so say it, NGP :D

However, my reason is a little different than the common thought. The recent quality psp releases such as Ys VII and the Oath in Felghana remake, or Metal Gear Peacemaker to KH: Birth by Sleep which I have yet to play, show me the potential the psp library has. It took the 1000 a little while to build an expanded library, but right out the door we got Lumines and Ridge Racer which I STILL play to this day. The price will definitely be expensive and I will not be surprised at all if they announce it at $400, but I'm buying it on the investment of future potential that the powerful handheld possesses. I will propably end u with a 3ds at some point, but I dont think I'm ready to drop the cash just for Street Fighter 4 3d at launch. (eyes my ps3 copy with TE stick sitting behind me)

I still play on my japanese PSP-1000 all of my games. Still hasn't given up.
And it certainly was not a "simple thing" when it came out.

For the people saying the psp doesn't have any games.... well you're very wrong.

Neither. When the 3DS comes out, I'm going to buy a shitload of marked down 2DS games. I might do the same with the PSP when the PSP2 comes out if the PSP is at a low enough price.

Eventually both - but given the choice between the two, I've gotta go with the 3DS..

I'll get this out of the way first - I'm a 25 year-strong Nintendo fan, however that loyalty has never, and will never, influence my decision when considering Nintendo's product versus a competitor's..
The overall deciding factor for me is support, and Nintendo has already announced new and old IP appearances. The original DS is a retro fans dream portable, and honestly, it plays games better in more traditional and simpler ways than the home consoles do.. I have no doubt that the 3DS will follow in those footsteps..
I'm also interested in seeing how the 3D attribute contributes to the game-play experience. Nintendo likes to take chances, and when it hits, it hits hard...
I'm not going to knock the NGP or the PSP, though.. I love both my PSP phat and my 3000. If I want to, I can hook up my PSP to my TV and play it, whereas I can't do such a thing with Nintendo's handheld. I'm not sure if either company announced such interaction, but I see Sony embracing this practice before Nintendo.
Also, the meat of the NGP is honestly impressive.. As powerful as the PS3? We'll have to see this first before it to be believable - but still, wow! Imagine the homebrew possibilities.. (Too soon? maybe, but I know I'm not the only one who is going to ponder the potential over the course of the next year or more before its release..)

Bottom Line: The 3DS looks to be much of what the DS is and has been for old-school gaming fans like myself, with enough innovation to remain progressive and maintain its foothold in the portable war. The NGP will no doubt dazzle with awesome graphics, impressive technology thanks to a beast of a processing unit, and serve as much more than just a gaming device, as Sony looks to cut into some of Apple's handheld game..

If I could see the future, it'd be same as it ever was: Sony's machine will be my personal tech-toy, but Nintendo's handheld will have my heart...

God no, most fat DS end up with broken hinges sooner or later. Nothing unbreakable about them.

I can wait for now. There are no games that interest me in neither console and buying hardware without anything to use it is a bad idea in my book.

I will be getting both the Nintendo 3DS and PSP2 at launch. I'm excited for the potential of both portable systems. The tech in the PSP2 and graphics I'm very impressed with thus far and I'm looking forward to some quality Sony support. I'm very excited in the 3D tech without glasses approach and look forward to see how Nintendo will utilize it. The vast library of games is impressive. I'm looking forward to many titles such as Metal Gear, Kingdom Hearts, Zelda, and many more... 8)

I'll probably wait at least 2 years before getting either. In the meantime I'll probably get a psp. Plus there's just too many ds games I haven't got around to playing yet. And I don't want to spend console amount of money on a handheld.
