I thought this thread was gonna be about on-rails shooters, like House of the Dead, Time Crisis, and Virtua Cop. I love those arcade-style shooters. Light-guns rule!

As for trains, meh, if they have a bar onboard then they rock.

I wasn't aware that there were Train simulators.

What exactly is the gameplay like in these titles?

Basically you drive a train and try to keep schedule. You can't just run as fast as you can because there are safety limits per track segment and other considerations. You may need to use sand to climb a slope or lower your speed so you can pick up some water for your boiler.

Some more modern games introduce more management elements but I haven't played any of those.

I have to say, it's not very accesible and pretty slow. The fun of these games is similar to model railroads, just running around and watching the train move is fun to railfans.

General_Norris put it nicely, as I too tend not to delve into the managerial aspects of trainsims. Simulation games are a niche market at any rate, the dedication required to get to grips with the controls seems to put most people off, not to mention the lack of any "real" action that attracts trigger-happy players.

Hm, that's interesting.

Well, I'm glad they exist since there are people who enjoy them.

It doesn't seem like a game for me though. I think I'd have more fun with a model train, building the scenery and laying the tracks to my whims. That's something I enjoyed quite a bit as a kid.

I haven't tried train simulators. However, I tried a bus one- Tokyo Bus Guide on dreamcast before and it was pretty cool.

Spirit Tracks is the best rail simulator I've played on the DS.
