Sony is sending "refurbished" models because they no longer manufacture 60gb models. Sony isn't sending you new ps3s, they're sending you broken ones that they fixed. I'm suspecting that that factors very heavily into the amount of YLODs you've run into. Just a thought.

Obviously. Until a complete re-melt of that crappy lead free solder to some good stuff, the current Gens will continue to have this problem.

Pretty much every company does this with electronics that aren't dirt cheap and thowaway. You send in something broken under warranty and you get a refurbished one. Then yours gets fixed and put back on the refurbished pile.

Got any clue how much it costs to have remelts done? Just curious in case mine ever ends up biting the dust. It's way out of warranty.

The physical reflow - not much. The infrared BGA workstation - couple hundred to couple grand depending on quality/complexity of the station.

Heh, I think he mean to have someone else do it.

I see craigslist ads by people that supposedly have a station offering to reflow 360s for $50 or so in my area.

Anyone got a reco for heatpads for the emotion chip? The one that comes with it doesn't cover the heat spreader and theres scorching on the spreader. Lucky the CPU and RSX are alright, in fact I hit them up with Arctic Silver 5.

Only a couple grand on the top end? Considering that I suspect this solder problem to be a trend going forward that might not be a bad investment in the long run.

Why not use a heat gun and some no-clean flux? OR a SMD skillet/NC flux?
